That is depressing and funny all at the same time.

Just a few extra seconds of serious thought would make one wonder how the fire department would even know such a thing since I would assume that nobody in the building had seen hide nor hair of an inspector or even an actual firefighter anytime earlier that day. Another second of serious thought would make one wonder why the fire department was even calling. I never heard of a fire department calling ahead -- they simply show up.

On the subject of fake phone calls is one that I received not long ago. They leave you a robocall to say that this is the IRS and you must call this number back immediately to avoid a lawsuit.

Since I wasn't born yesterday, I Googled the phone number that called me and this is (surprise, surprise!) a scam, where they get you on the phone and scare the snot out of you with threats of lawsuits and jail time and try to talk you into sending them the money you "owe" immediately over the phone by way of (now did you or did you not see this coming?) your credit card.

For anybody who might still be tempted to fall for this, let it be known that the IRS never calls people who owe it money. They snail-mail you and you have to sign for the envelope...and you will KNOW it's them. And if you still aren't sure, it won't be hard to check out.

Since these folks had already been reported but can't be easily stopped since they're not in America, I decided to call the number and make them miserable. A little funny voice in a heavy, heavy accent said, "IRS".

I know you all think of me as a nice gal, but having assumed different characters in quicksand videos, I am quite capable of pulling a Psycho Woman Act. Screaming as if all sanity is lost: You are not the IRS! Do not EVER call this number again! You are a fraud, a fake, a scam! You rotten dirty...(grrrrrrrrr....)

...and they hung up...

...and I called 'em right back, both the number they told me to call and the number they called me from (not the same)...

...and on the third call, they stopped picking it up entirely. Interesting...an IRS without voice mail? Just an endlessly ringing phone?

And I was blissfully alone...hopefully, forever, safely on the Do Not Call List.
