It's a rich people thing. When you're wealthy to the point where money is no object the game becomes having the best of the best, and damn the expense.
The cool thing is that eventually all the tech that goes into super cars filters down into the regular automotive market. Carbon Fiber car bodies and carbon fiber wheels are super expensive now, but once somebody figures out a way to mass produce them cheaply you'll see a huge jump in fuel economy because of the weight reduction.
