Sounds like you want the kind of hinge I use to make for custom model cars, for opening their hoods without binding...Something like this perhaps?

This LOOKS like it would solve the problem, except for the apparent necessity to make the angle cut shown. I could do that, and I may if I cannot find a better solution, but I think that without that angle cut the bottom edge will be a problem.

The angle can be left out, but the gap between the two tops would have to be larger to prevent binding.

Yes, exactly. But the objective is to have a tight fit.

Make the gap LARGER, then cut a tight-fitting insert.

Re: anyone here do cabinetry?
As I asked for advise here, and as several people we kind enough to make suggestions, it seems appropriate to post what became the solution.
Ultimately no hinge was used at all. Instead, I cut a small slot in the sides of the kitchen island, one on each side. These were about an inch and a quarter deep and just slightly wider than the thickness of the 3/4 inch plywood piece that was to hinge upward. Now, when I want the island in the "open" position, I simply lift it up and let it drop into the slot.

I will see what I can do about pics. It takes a bit. After I take a photo I have to offload it to one computer, load it into Bridge to reduce it is size, then copy it to a thumb drive and from that onto another computer used for Internet.

Re: anyone here do cabinetry?
Here are the requested pictures:
First, the kitchen island in its closed position.
Now the island in its open position. This was needed because of the three machines, each of which is controlled from its top surface.
Here is the notch solution. The top must be manually moved into position, without hinging, but the notch keeps it held in the open position.
