Sounds like your having fun--that's one hell of a commute but I don't think I'd mind going on lunch break in Hawaii.

I have to admit that Hawai'i doesn't suck.

And speaking of sucking: I live in Palolo Valley. Palolo roughly translates as 'crazy clay'. Up at the mauka — inland — end of the valley is Ka'au Crater. This is a cinder cone similar to Diamond Head, roughly equal in size to Punchbowl. It is part of a major water shed for the City of Honolulu and the entire interior of the crater is rumored to be one vast, treacherous quicksand swamp! All within hiking distance from my house.

Good question. It's a serious hike through private land. You have to apply for a permit and get permission from locals to let you past the signs that read, 'Kapu!' (Forbidden. Tabu.) And the whole place is rumored to be fairly dangerous. I've watched helicopters use the local park as a staging area to fly rescue crews in and out of the area.

Cool! If those are power line towers in the picture, that might be your best route in. Of course, from the descriptions, you won't be needing a route out. . .

Checked it out in map view with the terrain turned on. And in Google Earth, too- looks like an awesome hike.

Wow - I live in SE Pennsylvania with nary a swamp in driving distance. That crater looks like heaven to this Easterner. Go for it!

After loosing my quicksand virginity at Fred's studio, I … um, followed suit with a boyfriend in Honolulu.

Woohoo! Life is grand!

What else? I've finally taken up the guitar again. My Martin's in the shop … I'm running a website / support group … erm … I was in LA during the latest Hawai'i tsunami alert. My hanai nephew called to make sure I was okay after the waves passed the Big Island and moved on to the Mainland coast. He's a sweet kid.

I'm glad you're okay and no waves got you. It's good to keep the guitar thing up. Me, I wish I could find time for it again. I miss it, but I got a lot going on. Welcome back to Quicksandland, I missed you around here.
