You may not need to go the full "import to editor timeline, export to new format" route. I swear by (never at) Handbrake. Takes almost anything in, and can be configured to give you almost anything out. If you pick (as mentioned previously) a H.264 encoding tucked into a .mp4 file, that allows for easy web and mobile compatibility and you'll end up with a compact file that still looks pretty decent.
