Was someone sneaking a smoke? I melted a shop vac like that once, sucked up a but that wasn't quite out and as far as I can guess all the air flow lit the dust and crap in the catch bin on fire.

Certainly concur with Kham that if the full crew compliment had been onboard that this would't have happened. There's only so much you can do when in drydock.
Also, concur with the concerns on the effects the high heat may have had on the submarine's structural integrity. Several hundred feet below the ocean's surface is NOT the time to find out.

Right after the fire had been extinguished (left to die out, so that was where the oven-cooking concerns were raised) several bubblehead posters here and there wondered that this could be it for Miami. If repair costs were too high, scrapping might have been a more likely alternative.
San Francisco's repair was about 80 million, a bargain since it used the Honolulu's bow section (she was scheduled for decommissioning)

Think the vacuum cleaner thing was a smokescreen for the NCIS investigation....

Treason. Try, convict then hang the bastard up next to that Bradley Manning puke and the Hassan retard that shot up Ft. Hood.

Reading the charge sheet, I had to wonder if the NCIS agents had to restrain from just accidentally shooting the bastard in the head, or throwing him down a flight of stairs 3 or 4 times....
This may be the worst case of pissant excuse for the level of damage caused. Lordy
