All Your Favorite Space Ships On One Poster

Naturally, there are notable omissions. There's the Valley Forge from "Silent Running," but no Discovery from "2001: A Space Odyssey" (or Leonov from "2010"), which is much more iconic. I didn't recognize a couple of the sources, I wouldn't have included any of the Warhammer 40K stuff had I made the poster, but that's just me. It's still a great poster.

Plus... they left out the Eagles from Space:1999. Whatever one thought of the show, its model designs rocked.

Further evidence that this was compiled by someone much younger than most of us. I saw Valley Forge from Silent Running when it originally aired in 1972 and loved it. I have no idea where the Warhammer stuff comes from. Along with pop culture even my sci-fi references are now dated.

This is beginning to sound like dialogue from The Big Bang Theory .

Agreed and I was there but it still sounds like dialogue from The Big Bang Theory. They just made a show out of some of the crowd I ran with in college.

Darn! Had just written a long response to this post, didn't save it, got logged out and lost it.

Anyway, got started with laughing at the depicted length of Vader's Executor being 19km, checked the sources for that (and the size of the Death Star, while I was at it), then got into nuclear aircraft carriers and supertankers as a scale comparison, then into global steel production, then found myself designing a system where one could take nickel-iron asteroids, drop them into a low Solar orbit, then refine them into raw steel and then steel shapes using some sort of magnetic containment.

And the poster omits the Vorlon and Shadow planet-killers from Babylon 5, and the ships from Andromeda.

Yeah, what I said was that they had the Valley Forge in there, but not the Discovery, which was much more iconic. Also much smaller, and that might have something to do with its exclusion. I didn't see a Firefly-class freighter in there, either, although the Alliance ships from the show are on the poster.

The crazy thing is it really isn't as much as you'd think. A Nimitz class aircraft carrier is 333 meters long and weighs 101,000 tons. Executer was 19,000 meters so a really gross off the hip SWAG puts her tonnage at 5,762,762 tons. Here's the kicker though, worldwide production of steel in 2012 was 1.5 BILLION tons, so in terms of raw materials we're good to go. Now to just solve the pesky problem of how to build a hyperdrive......

Considering that it's a size-comparison poster, and that you could build an Eagle- or Firefly-sized ship model in 1/72 scale and still have it fit neatly on your desk, they'd be less than a speck compared to the "Independence Day" ships, Borg cubes, and the Executor.

Yeah the scale on this one is pretty harsh, and many of the ships here are post-1977 so the creators all suffer from "beat SW syndrome" a sad affliction where they have to come up with stuff that out-does that galaxy far far away. Like DG says, seriously? A transport the size of the Falcon is a dot next to an Impstar, you need a different perspective to get the true sizes. And, the original Death Star was roughly 120km in diameter; DS II around 500km.
