Now the island in its open position. This was needed because of the three machines, each of which is controlled from its top surface.

Here is the notch solution. The top must be manually moved into position, without hinging, but the notch keeps it held in the open position.

Fred, I would suggest putting some 'U' shaped metal (aluminium?) channel along the edge of the top, and a slightly larger section piece of same in the groove to reduce the wear and erosion on both components.

I may do something like that. On the other hand, the top is only opened maybe two or three times a week and the top itself is only less than a single sheet of red oak plywood - easily replaced should it wear out.

Sweet! And thanks for the photos!
The difference between theory and reality is that, in theory, there is no difference between theory and reality.

One person has asked directly so I will provide the answer here. The three machines at that end of the island are, left to right, bread machine, ice cream machine, and sous vide. The ice cream machine has a built-in freezer so no ice or salt is used. On the far end there is a microwave, on the hidden side there is a mini-fridge, and on the near side there is a mixer on a lift. The rest of the island is storage for pots and pans.

And for those occasions when I have a rental from a photographer or videographer there is a little sign on the top that warns it is not a good place for cameras, cell phones, etc.

If I could find some sort of round, transparent cylinder with some that went up and down inside, I would refer to the island as the tardis control panel.
