Really? What I saw was a re-boot of Episode IV

SPOILER ALERT - Anyone who's not seen the 1977 original read no further.

Let's see: a set of plans (sorry, part of a map) get hidden in a droid which then wanders across a desert (check) before falling into the hands of a farmboy (sorry, female scavenger) whilst being hunted by the Galactic Empire (sorry, First Order), led by a bad guy in a mask (sorry - oh no, that was correct, though this time there's a bad gal in a mask as well).

So the droid and the farmboy (scavenger), accompanied by a former Jedi (sorry, former stormtrooper who's probably going to turn out to be a Jedi) set off on a quest and end up at a cantina where they meet Han Solo and Chewbacca (sorry, this time they meet Han and Chewie THEN go to the cantina), where they find that the Empire (First Order) has built a terrible new weapon called a Death Star (sorry, BIGGER Death Star) which nevertheless seems to incorporate a peculiarly convenient weakness (check) - so the Rebel Alliance launch a desperate attack (check) in their X-wing fighters (check) which ... well, if you can't see where this is going you clearly have issues.

Oh, and there's a father-son reveal as well (check).

Yes, it's all done with flair and state-of-the-art effects, and my kids loved it, and there was the odd good moment. And it's way better than The Phantom Menace.

But part VII? Surely just a re-hash of part IV.

Maybe it's supposed to be symbolic......the more things change the more they stay the same......but yea agreed it would've been nice to see some more originality. Maybe now that they've appeased the fan base they'll try something new for the next one.

Added a spoiler warning to thread title so people are warned and we don't have to talk around corners about stuff lol.

Spoiler: Highlight to read. Don't forget the young hero witnessing the death-by-lightsabre of the new surrogate father figure at the hands of the black-masked villain after said father figure goes pacifist.

I find myself struggling to disagree with the first page of Best Rated user reviews over at IMDB - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2488496/rev ... _=tt_ov_rt

Perhaps Timothy Zahn's post episode VI novels (Heir to the Empire, Dark Force Rising, and The Last Command) would have been better as source material to base the new trilogy on.

I have not read any of the Star Wars (SW) novels but have read enough on the Web to get the gist of the SW Expanded Universe (EU). It sounded like much better source material than what Disney delivered. Somewhere the soul of SW disappeared.

I certainly support making a buck but not at the expense of telling a great story. The whole movie felt like one long merchandising commercial. Google "perverse incentives" to learn about this key economics term.

What makes me sad is that Disney does, in fact, know how to tell deep, engaging, original, soul-lifting stories ... but not this time.

If I remember correctly Lucas had an outline that spanned 9 episodes, and a clause in the Disney buyout said they had to follow it, so they're stuck with a rough draft they can't throw away. Agree with Pony, the Thrawn novels would make for amazing movies.
Bottom line, if you do something new and exciting the fans bitch. If you do something nostalgic and like what was done before the fans bitch. I'm starting to really detest the "hardcore" fan base of every sci-fi genre I love because nothing will satisfy these people. I bet you could re-film Empire shot for shot, line for line and they'd STILL bitch......

I read elsewhere just the opposite, namely that Lucas shared his outline with Disney and Disney opted to make its own outline instead.

Can anyone confirm which story is true?

I'd love something new and exciting. I was hoping for it in VII

Well, yes. Because Empire already exists and doing it again would be pointless.

What looks to be more promising are the spin-offs. There are slated to be six new films in total, with VII, VIII & IX in odd-numbered years, with stand-alones in between. If I read the runes correctly, next year we'll see the plans for the Death Star being stolen in the first place, and in 2018 a film which centres on Boba Fett. Nothing is guaranteed, but one live in hope.
