Guadelcanal: an appreciation

Normally I wouldn't start a separate thread like this, but to add this to Kham's ongoing Guadelcanal thread would interrupt the narrative, and I didn't want to do that.

I just wanted to thank him for doing this. It has been fascinating reading. Watching events spool out like this has been spellbinding and a real education. Thanks, from one history buff to another.

Indeed. I was tempted to post to that thread with my thanks as well. Thank you for creating this thread.

I have also been riveted by the narrative and am always happy to see more story added when I sign in. Several instances have prompted me to do further research on my own. Very good stuff.

I've had The Thin Red Line in my DVD collection for some time, but have yet to watch it. Unfortunately, this whole topic caused me to find out that it's conceptually inaccurate (it features and Army unit fighting in the wrong aspect of the campaign). But all the same, when I get to it, there will be all kinds of aesthetics at work thanks to Ken.

It is remarkable, even when you know the broad strokes, to actually see the ground, puts a completely different look to things. My focus had always been naval, and there is limited terrain there other than shallows and islands. One thing to note for all the LCS fans out there ----THIS is the very definition of that terrain. Strangely enough, the USN did ok handling ships up to BB size in it.....
