Watchman on the boat here got himself a new Tundra last winter, top of the line and loaded pretty well with all the goodies. He loves it, and it is a realy nice looking truck. But when he told me what he paid for it? I said, son, you paid more for that than I paid for my BMW 335i  Now, this was all pre-deal and massive rebate time, but still, holy frak

Toying with an F-150 in FX4 flavour, it will depend on a few things, but the pricing deals that Ford offering now are pretty attractive to say the least. That, and the 150 is just a good machine too :)

I am duly chastised! Ford is a great company with a long and illustrious history of producing fine automobiles and will probably be around for another thousand years! (BTW, it seems a little unfair that the two other companies received tax payers' dollars while Ford did not. Should Ford not receive some incentives or breaks for running a tight ship given that it's competitors have been given a leg up by the public?) Vincent Van Gogh said that orange is the color of insanity so here is one of my favorite Ford vehicles....in ORANGE!

Ah, the good old days. Pintos and Gremlins and Vegas- cool little cars, despite their noteworthy problems. Meanwhile, a contemporary Toyota (like my '81 Corolla 2 door sedan, also a front engine/rear drive subcompact) would slog along in its inglorious mediocrity for half a million miles of satisfactory service. When I sold it to a buddy so he could put the engine in his Corolla wagon, that little 3TC 1.8 l, 75 hp engine still didn't burn a quart of oil between changes, and would operate at full throttle for as long as you cared to push it hard. Hottest Summer, coldest Winter- it didn't care.

I've owned a Chevy Beretta, A Honda Civic (the old-school 4x4 "Wagovan"), a Ford Explorer, a Subaru Impreza-Outback, and now a Jeep Wrangler (in that order). All these cars but the jeep had over 100k on them when purchased (which is usually when major things start to go wrong) and the ones I didn't smash last to at least 175K without any major problems.
You ask me, It's not who built it, it's the owner. Do the maintence in the manual. Keep it tuned up. What makes a car a POS is not taking care of it.

See, back then they still cared about quality. Now all they care about is fucking over as many people as possible for as much money as possible, via forced replacements of pieces and forced switch-car-every-year habits. They realized too many people took good care of their cars and made them last, so they went out of their way to make everything shoddier so clients would be forced to replace with new ones. You say it backfired? Doesn't look like that to me. Magical billions fell from the sky.

It's gotten to the point, with me, that if I see someone driving a shiny new vehicle of an extra-expensive sort (Hummer, Corvette, whatever...), I automatically assume the owner of said vehicle is an asshole. Who besides assholes who fuck people over for a living can afford to drive expensive pieces of junk? Sure, I'm PROBABLY wrong, and some owners of expensive vehicles may actually be honest good people, but... nope. My brain seems to have hard-wired itself.

I mean, come on. The vehicle in your link? Please, that's only meant for people who like buying big toys for the hell of it. What's so special about it? The host himself admits any lower-grade truck could be modified like that one. What's so special? "Extra electronics." *facepalm*

Meh. I'll shut up now. Before I start a flame war. :|

Ford might have an illustrious history, and bragged in the 80s that "At Ford, quality is job one", but the only Ford I ever owned I hated. (Bought it used - five years old.) My wife who I married just after I got it told me two acronyms for Ford: "Fix or Repair Daily" and "Found on Road, Dead".

Given the choice, I'll buy a Japanese vehicle. They don't pile on all kinds of useless doodads that break down and cost too much to fix. Except the Nissan Quest minivan - neither I nor my wife liked the "Jem'hadar" dashboard console that you have to take your eyes to your right to look at just to, apparently, check your speed. Granted, maybe they've changed that since the first model year or two, but it sticks in my mind.

What was the repair history of the car before you bought it?

Here in the next century I have owned a 2004 Focus bought off the lot brand new. So far total repairs other then the usual break pads, windshield wipers, scheduled maintenance, = none.

The quality (at least at Ford) has caught up and surpassed the Japanese market in many ways including mileage which is why many Americans started buying them in the first place because many US manufactures kept pushing muscle cars and trucks that got shitty gas mileage.

Have to agree with Robert on this one. I bought a 1 year old Escort in 1996 and drove it 170,000 miles with very little trouble. In the spring of 2008 I replaced it with a 2008 Focus that now has 20,000 miles on it. (Your's better not be red, Robert!) So far, the repair bill has been zero except for a nail-flattened tire.
