A rifle that has the dirty gas impingment system of an AR and unergonomic magazine system of an AK.....ew. That's like genetically engineering a pet with the loyalty of a cat and the cleanliness of a dog.

I know, Myn. If you folks out there really want an AK, there are scores of choices, from Chinese imports to US-made varients that are one hell of a lot cheaper. Geez, for the money here, you could get one of those, plus an SKS, PLUS a boatload of 7.62x39 ammo. Some companies build things and try to sell you on just the cool factor

Dude not even a grand. WASRs are going for sub-500 bucks now that the 'crisis' is over. Last time I looked at ammo the Russian surplus was something like $150 for the 600 round spam can. Functional SKSs (as in, it works but it looks like it was used to beat several zombies to death) will run you $250-$300.

Have a question for the firearms enthusiasts here.

While the way the rifles/shotguns/handguns etc. handle, their reliability, design, and ease of maintenance etc, are all important, I was wondering what role (if any) the sound of them discharging plays in how much one is fond of a particular firearm? Watching these Hickok vids, I'm sometimes disappointed in how many of the weapons sound alike - I'm guessing because they use similar ammunition. Checking out videos of different classic weapons such as the AK family, the MP-44, Thompson SMG, the BAR, the Garand, the Stens and Brens etc.. all have very distinctive sounds when fired.

Wondering if those sounds really matter, or not.

With experience you can tell the difference but it doesn't really factor in to what you're buying, unless you're planning on running suppressed, in that case certain calibers generate less barrel pressure which makes it easier to quiet them down.

Plus, you have pretty much answered yourself. Stuff like the MP-40, Sterling, Sten, sound similar since they all are 9mm and all have similar ROF. The Uzi maybe slightly different with its' lower rate. Thompson with the bigger blast of the .45

Rifles, look at ones of the Brit No.4 and 5 rifles, the Mauser K98, and the Springfield 1903; all very similar but if you listen carefully, you can tell the '03 with the 30-06 and slightly bigger blast, since it's slightly more powerful. The Garand stands out with its' design, noted (good or bad) for the crack-crack-crack-crack-crack-crack-crack-crack --CHING! of the clip ejecting.

Magnums, .44 usually stand out with their bigger muzzle blast and boom. Machine guns? Harder The couple mg shoot videos are good but the volume of fire tends to a roar of noise. Stuff like the .50 cal stands out with the heavier thump and clearly slower -countable -ROF

My Saiga is the opposite- an AK mechanism chambered for 5.56 NATO or .223 Remington. (Yes, I know they are now slightly different cartridges, but the Saiga will digest either one.)

Yup, as long as you're chambered for 5.56 you can shoot both. It's not the caliber that annoys me I've just always found changing the mags out to be more awkward. If I had one to practice with it probably wouldn't annoy me as much.
