Seeing all the people on top of the island really gives you a sense of scale. Freaking beast of a ship. Shame to see it go but the keel for the new one is scheduled to be laid in 2018.
Dumb question......this has always bugged me.....what is the purpose of the pointy things sticking off the bow, the two rectangular wedge shaped things?

Those are retro-cat stuff Back when the aircraft being shot predated the towbar hookup on the nose gear, they were attached to the cat shuttle with steel cables; AFAIK, the cables were caught after the shot on the gear there. If you watch the Intruder video link I posted, you can see them in use for an F-4 and an A-3.

Sad to see this old, proud lady go... Enterprise certainly served her country and crew well.
