Thought all the movie buffs on here would like this. Really mind blowing video about how far the technology has come.

Very good little video. And a solid rebuttal to the retards who all agog at JJ's bullshit on the coming SW film; because its all bullshit. Sure, using some practical effects make sense IN SOME CASES. But grow fucking up JJ; without CG you wouldn't have a fucking movie. Period

I like Freddy's love for the subject.

Yes, practical effects can be easier to achieve a certain look... but one has to remember that it's just one tool in the toolbox. One also has to remember that bad effects are bad effects, regardless of how they were generated. And all good effects will disappear.

Note that I was actually unaware that the canyons in Mad Max Fury Road were added in post via CGI. Of course, I was riveted by the story, the coming conclusion of the chase, so I wasn't in a position to be trying to pick out the flaws anyway.

^^The Mad Max part was what blew my mind too. Saw it twice, never would've guessed.

CGI, when done well or done subtly, can be a major asset in a movie or TV show. The thing I've noticed about it is that it has allowed a lot of really crap movies, which otherwise never would have been made if more expensive practical effects were the only option, to be cranked out. Of course, conversely, it's also allowed a lot of really good movies to be made that otherwise wouldn't have been due to budgetary reasons.

I'm one of the people who prefer the model special effects in the original Star Wars trilogy to the digital SFX of the special editions. Thank heavens Lucas recognized that the stop-motion animation the AT-ATs and AT-STs were filmed with actually made them look more mechanical and realistic. And I'll take puppet Yoda over CGI Yoda any day.

I'd love to see the CGI (and the CGI only!) in The Last Starfighter and Babylon 5 get a loving updating.

One of my favorute CGI-only movies is Beowulf. Even though it's dated now, the technology that went into the movie was fantastic.
