Yogi Berra, who said "It Ain't Over Till Its Over," among many other things, died yesterday at 90.

Another original lost.

A true legend. May he rest in peace.

He said you should always go to other peoples funerals or they won't come to yours. Baseball philosopher poet. Less well known was that he was a 19 year old Navy gunner on a rocket barge at D-Day. He was out of baseball for three years serving the free world. Another of the greatest generation that will be remembered.

My knowledge of baseball is confined to the phrase "Who's on first, what's on second, I don't know's on third." There have been exactly three baseball players whose fame and/or personality was so great that they have penetrated even my indifference to the sport - Babe Ruth, Joe DiMaggio (and that's only because he's mentioned in Mrs Robinson...) and Yogi Berra. I really hope it's true that when gathering his team for a group photo, he told them to "Line up alphabetically by height."

Yogi Berra also made the obituary page of the Daily Telegraph - my newspaper of choice across the pond. To be sure, it was peppered with parenthetical explanations. For example: I now know (but will probably forget) what a pinch-hitter is, and that a batting average over .300 is considered exceptional.

I also learn that his real name was Lawrence. I always thought Yogi Bear was named after him - was it in fact the other way round?

I believe that quote is actually Casey Stengel. Yogi was Casey's protogee and both were masters of convoluted speech.
