Another one of the big Inessentials passed away last night due to cancer.

You guys will laugh but I'll always remember him as the Goblin King from Labyrinth. Dance magic dance.

Rest in peace, Great One.

A bit of a shocker.... but it appears he died the way he lived... on his own terms, and leaving behind another unique album. RIP.

I have a lot of memories of listening to his early albums during my high school days. In college, had a couple of his Brian Eno collaborations as well (pretty obscure, even then).

The only recent memory though was the rendition of the Cat People theme popping up superbly in Inglourious Basterds. Incredibly well placed piece of music.

GF and I watched Labyrinth last night with a few drinks in his honor.

His scene in the Ricky Gervais show Extras was the highlight of that entire series; he was absolutely hilarious. I don't think there was any field of performance that he couldn't nail.

I was a fan. Loved his music but most of all the way he understated his weirdness. He did't try to grab headlines with it but was kind of just being true to himself. They replayed parts of a 2002 interview with him on the BBC and in it he described his first real awakening to modern music. He was a big fan of Little Richard and went to see him perform in 1963. The opening act was some little known bunch of kids not much older than him, The Rolling Stones. When they appeared on stage some heckler yelled at Mick to "Get a haircut". Bowie mimicked Mick Jagger perfectly as he gave the response that he never forgot - WHAT? AND LOOK LIKE YOU? NOT BLOODY LIKELY! Bowie said he knew he had just seen the future of music and he wanted to be part of it.

Another time he casually mentioned reading the Oxford English dictionary. He thought it was just a very long poem about everything.

Simon Pegg pointed out that we shouldn't feel sad but lucky. The earth has been here for 4.5 billion years and we were alive during the time of David Bowie. Fortunate indeed.
