I love the sunset picture. The other pictures capture the strength of the Great Lakes (a la Edmund Fitzgerald on Lake Superior) and the power of these inland seas. I have never been to Lake Huron - have only seen it from the air flying into Detroit - and have only seen Lake Michigan in person from Chicago and Milwaukee - thanks for posting.

Very impressive shots!


The lights on the bridge looking upriver in Lorain, plus the sunset, are most beautiful.


The wave breaking upon the bow of James R. Baker is also very impressive, especially when you take into account how big those frieghters are.

The way the lights are illuminating the stones being off-loaded in Lorain makes it look like a pile of ice.


And, there's something touching about that aft shot of the ship's wake on that heavy overcast afternoon... perhaps a touch of lonliness... not sure.

You should post a link here (if you feel it's appropriate) to the great lakes shipping 'fan' website. Having been raised in the upper midwest, and having spent many a childhood afternoon at Belle Isle, it's one of my favorite 'time kill' sites on the net - as well as airliners.net of course!

As far as size goes, the Barker there is about 1000 feet long, with the unloading boom on deck about 250 feet; the forward mast is about say, oh 90-odd feet above the waterline there, so that gives you some idea of the splash

Wow! I didn't know there were any steamers of any size left on the lakes! From the time I was about eight until about eighteen, I wanted to find a job working as an engineer on a steam-powered ship. Crazy dreams of youth. . .
