BREN gun Vs BAR

Postby kham » Thu Jul 14, 2016 11:06 pm

With the Gunny no less. And , couple observations; like Hickok, he's a big guy. Plus, that whole reloading thing for the BAR , called out as awkward. For let's be honest, the BAR is a light machine gun. It isn't selective fire, no single shot capability to use as a normal rifle. Sure, I'd use one, but I'm more average sized , and an FN was plenty heavy with all the accutrements there. This monster, would be not fun. Never have seen a BREN for real yet.

Still, cool little video

Used to have a Browning semiauto 12 gauge based on the BAR action. That gun was HEAVY!

Maybe it's just me, but both of these vids made me cringe. "Walking fire?" As the current generation says, "Is that even a thing?"
I know, these are just for entertainment, but in the first vid I would have been using cover, taking out one of the silhouettes at a time, "clearing datum", then taking another from a different position, etc. Mag changes would have been done lying on the ground behind cover.
In the second video, I would have been using those sand hills as cover, sneaking around until I spotted a target, then taking it out and moving on to the next one. Hickok45 walking up over that hill and spotting three targets was suicidal.
I know, deer don't shoot back. But if that was three deer, he'd have spooked them. A better plan would have been peeking around that sand hill, spotting the deer before they spot you, picking your target, and taking it out with a well-placed shot (or burst) before it knows you're there.
In the unlikely event I ever have to assault an enemy position by myself with an MG, I'll do my damnedest to make it so that the first hint the Enemy has of me being there is when I start shooting at them inside their position (or from the flank, the rear, etc.)
Or am I totally in the wrong here?

When my father was in the reserves in the 1950s - Royal Canadian Artillary - they were trained to be proficient on the Sten, the Bren and the Lee Enfield, as well as their howitzers. He left just as they were introducing the FNs to replace the Enfields... Dad said he and his buddies thought the FNs were toothpicks compared to their former rifles, just based on the weight difference... I don't think he ever fired a BAR, but was fond of the Bren.

I think some old guy arrogance there :D I might call an FN a lot of things, but ''toothpick'' was not one of them :P

And yeah, walking fire was indeed a thing, for WW I and maybe parts of II, it's what the BAR was built for. Remember, both the BAR and BREN are small-arms, even if functioning as light machine guns. The guys carrying them can't just stay in a hole while the rest of the company advances. Even the actual MGs have to, but they at least have 2-6 guys carrying the hardware and ammo

Yeah, Dad does have a bit of a swagger... ;) But it is well-earned, I think. :)

I don't handle firearms much, but when I do, they always feel like they weigh a ton. Even our C-7 and its variants feels pretty hefty to this civilian. ;)

C7 is about a kilo kighter. Which when you think about it, is unfair to those calling them toys, or made by mattel :D Maybe it's the no wood and use of plastic :P
