Hmmm, I could wax poetic about VHS.

Needless to say, I spent many many many hours with that technology. To this day, it (and some Hi-8mm stock) still holds the original source of many of our community's collected clip heritage.

I still use my VCR (I'm surprised it worked) and have some amazing memories associated with VHS. I practically grew up in video stores, wishing to work in one when I got older (that dream never came true). I remember my middle school friend would send me home with blank VHS tapes so I could record anime for her on Adult Swim whenever she was grounded and I spent most of my high school career recording the New Outer Limits when the Sci-Fi channel would have marathons. I didn't get an allowance growing up, so I had to beg for bank tapes or spend what little money I had on them. We live next to a used book store and I couldn't afford $20 for a DVD, so I'd get a VHS alternative for a couple bucks. That's how I got my VHS copies of Star Trek: First Contact and Star Trek IV: The Voyage home. My uncle would also let me borrow his Star Wars and Star Trek tapes. He recorded either The Empire Strikes Back or Return of the Jedi back in early to mid 90's, judging by the commecials. I borrowed the tape in the early to mid 2000's. I remember being amazed when I took the tape home and saw the commercial for Super Return of the Jedi for Super Nintendo! I didn't even have a Super Nintendo back then

There's a lot of hidden gems never released on DVD, Laserdisc, or Bluray, so there's plenty reason to own a VCR! I'm a little heartbroken! I'm kinda young, in my mid twenties, but VHS and VCRs were such a huge part of my life and continue to be a big part of my life today. I hate to see it go. We all need to learn VCR maintenance because those things don't last forever! Since age 7 or 8, I've been through more VCR's than I can count!

Wouldn't worry too much, it's still not too hard to find a functioning Beta-Max player, will be plenty of used VHS machines on the secondary market for a long time. Plus like the article says sooner or later somebody will be able to whip one up with a 3D printer.

I still have a substantial number of used VHS cassettes and probably a few stil in sealed packages if anyone wants them.

my opinion good riddance. they are not the safest way to store footage cause if you make the wrong move the machine ruins the tape when ejecting. my machine ruined a number of my recordings when I was a kid and I dont know why. no offense i hate vhs.
