GWAR!!!!!!!!!

Postby nachtjaeger » Sat Dec 12, 2009 7:50 am

Okay, so I let my niece talk me into taking her to see Gwar, The Red Chord, and Job for a Cowboy tonight.

The Red Chord (out of Boston) is straight up hardcore Death Metal.

Job for a Cowboy (out of Arizona) is also Death Metal, but with two guitars and some serious talent they sound musically more like old school Metallica.

Gwar. . . not sure if I can describe them at all. Imagine being at a SciFi convention, a metal band in Klingon armor comes on stage- and then you drop acid. :? :o
These guys are seriously bizarre- they make "South Park" seem like wholesome family entertainment, but always with tongues firmly in cheek. A psychologist could write a doctoral thesis on all the imagery and archetypes in their seriously sick and twisted performances. But- they rock!

Yup, that's Gwar. I remember that being the tape I put in my stereo when I wanted to piss my parents off. 8-)
Damn I'm old. I had a stereo with a casset deck. :(

Wonder if the armor Gwar wears and all the blood spurting was influenced by Gene Simmons. :)

I remember those guys. I had to upgrade from my Quad 8-track to play them. 8-)
It's a dirty job but I got to do it for over 20 years. Thank you.

I've seen GWAR at least 10 times since 1992.
They're just great!!!

regarding the costumes...

(this is the tale I heard)
the founding members of GWAR were art students who had a college band something like REM or some shit,
then one halloween they did this funny death metal show with some costumes (surely inspired by KISS and Alice Cooper)
they found themselves far more well- recieved with that routine, it just became what it was.

Thanks to the costumes, GWAR has been able to cycle through members without anyone really noticing,
Except for the singer Dave Brockie (Oderus Urungus)

It kind of fell apart for me when Carnival of Choas came out.
It had about 2 or 3 good songs on it, but GWAR (like every other band) was losing it, for me anyways.

But I tell you,
they're still one of my 10 favorite bands of all time (aside Maiden, Morphine, Tull, Pink Floyd and S.T.)
If the system had one neck,
You know I'd gladly break it.

I still do. It has a CD player as well, if that makes you feel any better. But the idea of downloading music into an ipod (whatever one of those might be, exactly) is far too technologically frightening for me to even consider.

I'm not sure how I would define "Band you would take your uncle to see," except that this probably isn't it.
