Quicksand Fans

I discovered Heavy Metal Magazine sometime in 2010. I was 19 years old and in my second semester of college. I discovered Heavy Metal while reading a book at the campus library called Comics, Comix, and Graphic Novels (I have no idea why I don't own a copy of that book!). Some time later I bought a decent sized lot from Goodwill's auction website.

I've been a comic book reader since I learned how to read, and as I got older, I wanted to something with a little more edge. I read the few EC Comics reprints and DC Vertigo comics that I had at the time, but it wasn't enough. When I started reading Heavy Metal it was everything I wanted in a comic plus more! The stories in those magazines are so shocking and so bizarre, it's unbelievable! I have so many great memories reading Heavy Metal such as reading Druuna:Mandragore for the first time! I tried telling someone about the stories I read in those magazines and the response I got was, "what the hell are you reading!" so I mostly keep my interest to myself.

In total, I've know three people who are actually familiar with Heavy Metal. An ex (who I don't talk to anymore) and two guy friends. All of them are way older than me! The one friend found a minty fresh copy of Heavy Metal the movie on VHS in his house somewhere and has a Heavy Metal video game collection. The other friend, who I think is an excellent writer, has written quicksand stories that I think belong in Heavy Metal magazine.

Anyway, here is my collection.

The first picture is the original 20 some odd issues I bought from Goodwill's auction website back in 2010, in the second photo are the issues I've either gotten through subscription or bought from their website. The third and fourth pictures are of the artbook they put out. I bought it for $5!

I believe that one of the artists for the magazine back in the 80s or so -- Milo Manara -- did a quicksand scene in one of his graphic novels.

I think the title of the graphic novel is Dies Irae: The African Adventures of Giuseppe Bergman, Part 2 for those who want to read it or just want to see the quicksand scene.

That was easier to find than I thought! I think I found the quicksand scene too!

I found out about the magazine because of the movie.
When the movie hit HBO "back in the day" I spent the night at a buddy's house who had cable so we could (on the sly) stay up and watch it. He crashed before it came on. I didn't. My life has never been the same.

The animated series Aeon Flux reminded me of Heavy Metal's style a lot.

I didn't get around to watching the movie until late last year when a friend told me Veteran of the Psychic Wars by Blue Oyster Cult was in the it! I was wonder struck once the movie ended! It gave me the same feeling I felt when I experienced the magazine for the first time.

On the one hand, I wish I discovered Heavy Metal when I was in high school as it would have had a stronger impact on me back then. On the other hand, I would have been so paranoid and anxiety ridden at the thought of my Mom finding them, it would have ruined any enjoyment I could have possibly gotten from them.

He's nothing but a low-down, double-dealing, backstabbing, larcenous perverted worm! Hanging's too good for him. Burning's too good for him! He should be torn into little bitsy pieces and buried alive!

What's really cool about this is the number of SCTV voice actors in it. John Candy, Joe Flaherty, Eugene Levy, Harold Ramis.... not to mention other old pros like John Vernon. And who could beat that kick ass soundtrack?

Slightly off topic, but isn't "Hanover Fiste" the coolest name ever!?

I wonder if they ever published a collection of stories that made the movie.

I checked. No such thing exist, except in my dreams. It's a shame, really. I would have loved to see the Harry Canyon story expanded on.

I think Captain Sternn and Den were based on stories from the magazine. One of my magazines has a part of a Den story in it. Taarna was inspired by the Arzach stories which were published in Metal Hurlant. Part of the Arzach stores were reprinted in English in Heavy Metal.
