So, you want to play varsity football?

Not the game kind....

From Sal's

Does always seem to come at inconvenient times, huh? It's possible that they weren't even the intended targets, since ballistic weaponry -despite ChiCom horseshit fantasies... -- are fairly useless against ship targets. What IS amusing , is the insta-dicksuckery by the LCS-Fellatio Team, springing into action. For the mission, by fucking definition , would be for the LCS. And as one points it out, that it wouldn't be threatened by THIS per se, is irrelevant. The FACT, that it is USELESS for the mission, IS. What it needs, is not fucking water-skiing speed; it needs a good air defence radar (NOPE) and a useful SAM system (NOPE X 2)
All it is, and will ever be, is a 40-knot aluminum bayliner, size bloated, with a popgun, and minimal air-defence. All the powerpoint retard horseshit on this PLANET will never, EVER change that

I thought that current radar tech could pinpoint the launch coordinates of a ballistic weapon and have counterbattery fire inbound before the first round impacts. Need to set that up like a CIWS on automatic. Even 5" (127 mm) HE says "I love you too." 8"/203 mm says it more sincerely. Sort of counterproductive to use a million dollar missile or airstrike to take out a WWII surplus Howitzer or a worn out truck with a Katyusha rail.

Suggestion is the missiles *may have been C802 clones, but if so, they were fired out of envelope and with no targeting information. Which is par for snackbar cavemen who spend more time jumping up and down than listening to advisors. But as to your question, that technique only works if you have LOS to the launch point. Over-the-horizon stuff is a whole different matter, and why mobile missiles are so hard to deal with. You'd be lucky to have 5" and be in range. And we don't have 8" any more. Using iron bombs is one of the most efficient ways for killing stuff like this. But you need target information.

The point they dodging like Shillery and fake sniper fire.... is that THIS sort of near-coast op is precisely what the LCS was supposed to be designed for. And you could throw one, two, fuck, the entire class in there right now, and if they were in the the proper engagement envelope, all they could do is die like fucking dogs and target barges. THAT is the inconvenient part. You have a warship that can't fight
ANYTHING. Not that this never came up back in, oh, '03 or so, and then again more than a few times.... in the intervening time period

I expect even more coming...

One problem, of working for lying cocksuckers, is that the information flow tends to be, well, put politely, sporadic

THIS, from Bring the Heat:

USNI News reports:

The crew of a guided-missile destroyer fired three missiles to defend themselves and another ship after being attacked on Sunday in the Red Sea by two presumed cruise missiles fired by Iran-backed Houthi-forces, USNI News has learned.

During the attack against USS Mason (DDG-87), the ship’s crew fired the missiles to defend the guided-missile destroyer and nearby USS Ponce (AFSB(I)-15) from two suspected cruise missiles fired from the Yemini shore, two defense officials told USNI News.

Mason launched two Standard Missile-2s (SM-2s) and a single Enhanced Sea Sparrow Missile (ESSM) to intercept the two missiles that were launched about 7 P.M. local time. In addition to the missiles, the ship used its Nulka anti-ship missile decoy, the sources confirmed. Mason was operating in international waters north of the strait of Bab el-Mandeb at the time of the attack.

According to a defense official on Monday, Mason “employed onboard defensive measures” against the first suspected cruise missile, “although it is unclear whether this led to the missile striking the water or whether it would have struck the water anyway.” The official did not specify that the defensive measure was a missile fired from the ship.

So
Close enough for this ship's CO to release batteries and shoot
And launch a decoy. We likely won't know much more now, like hits, or did the decoy work, or was this just erring on the side of caution. Which would be fine. Personally if it was anywhere near my ship, I'd vaporize the fucker. And if I could, kill the launcher

Oh and they tried again today. Nothing. What's sadder is some of the comments and retardo-beliefs on display, combined with the current Monty Python-esque response from what passes for leadership in the pentagon now; " I shall threaten you a second time to maybe do some sort of serious response!" Give me a fucking break. The dumbass playing CinC is still stoned watching reruns of himself on ESPN...

Okay, if this was a Noor missile, things just got serious. I was thinking a lot more primitive hardware. Be nice if all of our ships could have an armed drone on CAP at all times. We need to hit back and hit back HARD. Sledgehammers kill flies very well.

Apparently Boingo the wonder dog stopped watching reruns of himself on ESPN long enough to give his exalted permission to use cruise missiles- but only on the radar they were using for target information. No details beyond that.

Well it's going to make pointing those Silkworm's a lot more difficult.

What it really says is that the LCS ships would never have been able to operate under such a relatively mild threat. The bad guys might well have given the US Navy it's first loss to enemy action in decades if they had been facing one of the things. Instead they picked a fight with a class of ships with a mission statement that basically reads "if it flies it dies". It does show that the LCS can't operate in a low threat environment and is really intended as a "no threat" survivor.

Strategically it's also another example of the USA being involved in something without trying to be involved. I don't ever recall that working very well in any situation.

There's a much bigger picture at play here. The Navy Commander quoted specifically mentioned Freedom of Navigation. There are several SEA leaders that noticed this episode, I guarantee you.
