Some well-placed proton bombs or torpedoes in the hangar bays along the equatorial trench during the first wave of the attack might have made a dent in the Imperial defense of the target trench, though.

But Vader's Elite's cut them to shreds as it was, I'm not sure provoking a launch of some of the thousands of ordinary TIEs the Death Star carried would have been good. Mind you, you can only be attacked one, or a pair at a time....

When I was an air campaign planner, it was an axiom that you take out as much of the enemy's airpower as you can while it's still on the ground.

You could also ask why the ion cannon/blaster turrets on the Y-wings weren't used to clear their tails when they were jumped by TIEs in the trench.

Chekhov's gun, Fred. When you show a fighter with a gun turret, at some point in the story, that turret needs to be used.

The trench they attacked was a lot smaller than the equatorial trench- and it had a definite end at the exhaust port.

Much as I enjoy suspending disbelief, it would have been great to see the Y-wings' turrets in action. And drama aside, wouldn't the exhaust port have been an easier target if they had been heading vertically down at it?
