This is going to be a challenge to explain. How does a ship that can track hundreds of targets from surface to space manage to get in front of a container ship? With the starboard side presented to the oncoming? Still reporting seven missing and three flooding compartments.
It's a dirty job but I got to do it for 27 years. Thank you.

I spent the last 2 hours fielding assorted questions of that nature on another board.

It is all speculation, but I suspect that it will come down to failing to take the proper action in time, for god knows how many human factors. What's really bad, is that a crossing situation like this, I could solve about 2 nanoseconds after the plot was complete. Come right, steer on that after masthead light you see? Ok son, hold your course. When we cross behind him, come back on base course

How many times have I simmed this or RAN the SIM for someone?
I have a horrible feeling those missing 7 guys are in those flooded berthing compartments

Looks like they thought they had the room to cut the other guy off and misjudged.

Oh, they trying to use the AIS track on the container boat now to try and spin he was 'erratic' ... as opposed to doing lines back and forth, like waiting on a pilot or a dock. And he was 'stalking' the DD. Ya know, you gotta do something about the degree of untreated and uncommitted people with mental illness who have internet access

GCaptain has posted some hi res photos
DD Damage shots
One theory I had was the anchor being down and causing damage. Yep. You can see the impression of the fucking thing in the superstructure. And where the hell are these missing guys???

They found the missing guys, where I suspected
Japanese TV is reporting all 7 of them.
Also, the captain was apparently injured while in his cabin. Meaning they never even called the poor bastard

A terrible loss... :( Be interesting to see how the inquiry shakes out.

If the pointy part hit the superstructure that means the bulbous bow went right into the hull. There's a hole below the waterline big enough to drive a truck through.
