Quicksand Fans

So just want to start this off saying this sounds well thought out in my head but as I have weird sleep cycles due to insomnia, I apologize if this is really a hot mess.


So was having a movie night and watched the smokey and the bandit movies. I get to the third one which to me at least is enjoyable. Was wondering is there an unwritten rule of film making that states if a third movie gets made, the wtf o'meter must be turned to 11. This is by no means the only third movie that does this and I could list a whole bunch. But I kind of want to see other opinions first

Absolutely and this is nothing new as evidenced by your choice. The first movie might be to tell a story that everyone enjoys and makes a lot of money. The second might be to make more money and flesh out the first story. The third is just for money. Great example of this is the Godfather movies where the first two are some of the best movie making ever but the third is a turd. Occasionally you get freaks like James Bond or Star Wars where the purpose of the entire series is to tell a story but that's rare. I think there's a reason why we never saw Kill Bill Vol 3.

I think Duncan is right on about the third of a series being solely for money, although there are obviously exceptions such as is likely when something is actually planned as a series. From a creative point of view, just about any movies (or novel) that is original is going to be heavily about character development and not just plot. By the time a sequel, or second sequel, is being made, however, the character development has already been done. This leaves a good deal of screen time, formerly used for character development (I hate snakes!) that is no longer needed for that but that has to be filled with something. That might be a more elaborate plot or it might just be a lot of junk.

One notable, recent exception to this trend is Deadpool II. Loved it just as much as the original.
I think the key is to give the audience more of what they want, which is the original movie, and not try out-do the first one or take it off on some weird tangent.

Really loved smokey and the bandit 3 just really weird. Jerry reed is way to happy to cosplay as his best friend. There's the adult hotle scene. But my only actual problem with the movie is snowman stops being himself. He would never be that sleazy as to put the fish in the hammock in the first two that's more bandit. It's literally like by dressing like bandit, he becomes bandit. Also in the first on he can't fight at all. Even makes a joke about that fact. Then because he is cosplaying bandit he dominates. I mean the bikers get a few shots in. Also with how well known bandit is. There is no way someone wouldn't have heard the difference in their voices. But I love the wink and nudge to jr running into a little person dressed as tarzan as the actor who played him played tarzan.

Yea that's the messed up thing about it, Jerry Reed kind of becomes Burt Reynolds lol.
