I hope everyone takes this one seriously, especially on the BI, which has had a rough time of it this year.

BI is on hurricane warning, and has cancelled school starting tomorrow. We're on watch, but will get upgraded to warning soon.

Wow, saw this mentioned in the news but didn't realize it was a Cat 5. Batten down the hatches........

This could be a bad one, especially for anyone on the east side of the Big Island (Hilo, Pahala, Naalehu, and South Point). Also, I'm no volcanologist but a super abundance of rainfall that percolates down to magma is probably not a good thing.

I swung by the grocery store yesterday afternoon on my way home, around 4pm. Just wanted to "top off" our supplies, maybe add a little variety to the inventory of canned goods. While full-fledged panic buying wasn't going on, it was close. Traffic backed up for the parking lot. Certain high-desirability items missing from bare shelves. Driving home takes me past a City Mill, and it also had a line of traffic waiting to get in. Reports from buddies around the island are that the big-box stores are all swamped. Gas stations all have lines as well (I filled up yesterday morning.)

Although a lot of people have put it off until late in the game, seems like they're taking it seriously. Which is a good thing.

We've got 20 gallons of potable water laid in containers already, and will add another 20 to that tonight. Fill the bathtub and use that for sanitation. Our stove is a gas stove, so that may continue to function during a power outage, but if not, we've got little camp stoves. I wish we had more cylinders of butane, that I had checked those earlier, but we'll be able to have hot water if we need it, and the occasional hot meal.

Plenty of batteries, a decent number of lights, the means to charge cell phones. I wish we had some battery powered fans, but we'll survive without this time. We have a scanner that gets NOAA frequencies, but don't have an actual FM/AM radio. Also on the "to get for next time" list. I think we threw it out when we moved last year.

We're in decent shape. Hopefully, all we have to contend with is a soggy weekend, maybe a little interruption in power. If he stays on the projected track, we'll start getting real wind tomorrow evening. Already seeing some of the rain, I think.

Good deal. Water's easy/cheap to keep on hand. A case of Walmart Brand bottled water costs $3. I keep 7-8 cases in my basement and just rotate through them so they stay fresh.

Update:
It's Friday morning, local time. Lane has weakened to a Category 2. As such, its reach is diminished, and its arrival here in Oahu is delayed. Right now, it's a bit gusty and sprinkly, but nothing scary. The serious stuff is now scheduled to arrive overnight, somewhere between 8pm and 2am. Lane has also slowed down a little, and will be executing a turn to the west as it passes us, the combination of which will cause it to "hover" just below us. The nastiness, at least for Oahu, is now expected to last into the early part of next week.

At the moment, we still have power and internet (obviously). The only emergency supplies we've used came from the liquor store.
