Cloud Storage

Postby Fred588 » Sun Nov 24, 2019 2:10 pm

While I highly recommend AGAINST using any form of cloud storage a one's only storage of anything important, I think it is a great place for backup storage. Personally I keep everything of any value on a minimum of two different physical drives on my own system and am rapidly moving toward two different cloud storage accounts as well for the even more important things.
Prices do vary quite a lot but I have been very pleased with Google Drive for many years. However, for anyone looking for this sort of thing, strictly for storage, my top choice has a very appropriate name. It is called Sync.com.

I too have been happy with Google Drive. Don't know as I'd trust Google with dark and deep secrets that I'd prefer to keep to myself forever, but for just plain old backup of random junk that I don't want to lose to a crash, it has been great.

I do have some quicksand stuff on it...because that never counted as a dark secret, although there were times when it was deep.

Those USB flash drives are getting mighty good too.

I run 2 slave hard drives for data storage along with my SSD main drive, one slave a duplicate of the second. Hard drive crashes and loss of irreplaceables in the past steered me down that path.

The slaves are backed up with a USB drive kept stored outside the house in an insulated shed in case of fire or similar. Nothing goes offsite. I never trusted "cloud" services. I already lost much forever from free photo and file storage services suddenly disappearing with my stuff. tinypic.com was the latest to go away and take it all wit them. I found out later IMGUR bought them out. Where are my photos?

In the previous decade I had a free-host website on Geocities for a year, only to have them say one day that they were dropping the free service and you had to pay to get back into your site to retrieve everything on it.

Businesses are interested in protecting their own asses, not yours. They don't care about you ...just your stuff. Always keep that in mind when they smile at you and say "TRUST ME".

Funny,.... Carlin's "Too much stuff" routine just popped into my head. How right he was. What would he be saying about cloud storage today?

I can only imagine

You are completely right. This is why I have TWO cloud accounts with two entirely different companies. And its also why everything is also double backed-up on my personal systems. By the way, backing EVERYTHING up is currently making use of about 115T worth of hard drives distributed across five computers. There is no end to it, of course, and I am saving up now for computer number 6.

I still use Dropbox for a lot of my cloud. The way its integrated with MacOS is really great. I guess i'm partial since I've been using it from my college days. Though I admit Its not that much storage. For Bigger storage the iCloud is pretty dirt cheap. One Drive I've also been very happy with.

Although there is clearly no way that data stored in the cloud is absolutely safe from an arbitrary decision by the hosting company, and also with the disclaimer that I am not lawyer, I think it is reasonable to say that the hosting company has a greater obligation to its client when the service is paid that when it is free.

Most of the available service providers offer both free and paid accounts. I think it is something like 15G with Google Drive. That is probably adequate for most people, although a single DVD image file is about 4,4G. The paid accounts, on the other hand, are often MUCH bigger. I will be cancelling one of my three cloud accounts when my subscription expires because it has become, at 100G, WAY too small. The other accounts are both 2T each and can be expanded well beyond that.

I may be hijacking my own thread here a little but the purpose of this post is essentially the same.
Thumb drives with capacities up to a half T are now available for very little. I have seen at least one advertised for less than $30.00, although I would be very suspicious of its quality. A pair of half T drives should be enough for almost anyone's video collection, with a few exceptional exceptions.
There are a few things to be careful of. First, make sure the interface is at least USB 3.0 and that the port on your computer is the same. USB 2.0 is just painfully slow in comparison. Second, make sure, if you can, that the drive is not a fake. Just because the label says one brand does not mean it really is. Make sure it really is the capacity it claims to be. I'd suggest loading it up with pretty much anything, then randomly checking the saved files to make sure they are intact. This can be tricky. I purchased one of these a few months ago and it initially failed this test. Later and subsequently it has worked just fine so I really don't know what the problem was.

In any case, there is really no excuse for losing files to failures of storage devices. If its important store it in multiple places and VERIFY the success of the storage. Save from device A to B and then A to C, NEVER A to B to C.
