First Star Wars .... audience reaction.

Postby BogDog » Tue Jan 07, 2020 6:19 am

With all the talk and positive/negative things being said about the last of the 9-movie saga, it's nice to go back to an innocent time when nobody had ever heard of Wookies, TIE-fighters or some fickle kid named "Skywalker". There was no "Empire Strikes Back", no "Jabba the Hutt", no "Death Star", No Falcon and no R2-D2, all extremely famous to us today. We were space movie virgins!

Watch the opening of this TV show to see what we were use to up until then as far as space effects go: https://youtu.be/Y6BXaGEuqxo?t=6m2s

We've come a long, long way from what is NOW a long, long time ago, in a theater not all that far, far away.

So take a trip back with me to a dark theater in 1977 and watch the ending, one that nobody outside of the Lucas production studio or preview rooms had ever seen before. The reaction is priceless and brings back memories.

The soundtrack was recorded back then and synced with clean video. The sound of the audience says it all....The beginning of a new era right there folks. :P

Enjoy (if you saw it back then, then I KNOW you will): https://youtu.be/PzRveOGMflo

P.S....Now I saw something I cannot un-see. At the end when Ben says "The force will be with you, always.", Luke's X-wing stage prop ship is being rocked back and forth by unseen stage hands and looks just silly, as if he were riding on rough waves in a boat ...Wouldn't his flight be smooth? ;)

Space 1999 was actually very influential toward Star Wars in the area of soacecraft design; before, spacecraft were either upgraded V2s or flying saucers; after, spacecraft looked like flying dump trucks, which is what they would look like if they were designed for use in a zero-atmosphere low gravity environment.

Ya, but I speak of motion effects and clever masking techniques made possible by repeatable computer manipulation. Space 1999 never looked so good.

It's all shown here. Even the Space-1999 craft is mentioned in the first 2 minutes: https://youtu.be/85MK2GDkoxo

connection betwen Space1999 and Star Wars. in 1976 "Dave Prowse" was credited as a creature in an episode. Beta Cloud was title the, I think.
