Remembering Dennis Hopper

Postby Robert » Sun May 30, 2010 2:27 am

The river flows
It flows to the sea
where ever that river flows
that's where I want to be
Flow river flow
let your waters wash down
take me from this road
to some other town

Flow river flow
past the shady tree
go river go
go to the sea
Flow to the sea

There were many sides to Dennis Hopper, no doubt.

But the one that stands out for me is the example of substance abuse that was on display in 'Hearts of Darkness: A Filmmaker's Apocalypse'. If you see him in that, you'll never, ever forget it.

So true... in a lot of ways, that film shows what madness is all about better than the actual finished film of Apocallypse Now...
Hard to beat seeing Dennis H ranting to Francis Ford Coppala at length about what a jerk that director Francis Ford Coppala is... obviously clueless who he was talking to. You just couldn't wright a schene like that for a movie and have anyone believe it... :)

Still, give the man credit. He was a true original.

RIP Mr. Hopper.

Dennis Hopper was a brilliant artist who nearly destroyed himself through substance abuse. He came close to throwing away everything his God-give talent had given him. However, unlike some of his contemporaries, he managed to pull himself away from the abyss. If he were to give anyone advice about life, it would probably be that no one should do the things he did.

I'm reminded of an old saying: "We grow old too soon and become wise too late."

I hope he has finally found peace.

Big Bad John
