What kind of pumps and how much?

What did the fill look like when you removed it?

Pumps are AquaClear model 50 or 60 if I remember correctly, somewhere between 250-300gph. Cost was about $30 each. They're usually used to create current in large aquariums. Submersible, safe (pet safe = people safe), and tough, I ran them nonstop literally for years in my Piranha tank and no matter how crusty they got they just kept chugging along. Only weakness is small debris, you absolutely have to have some sort of filter sponge over the intake or the smallest pebble or even a bit of sand will jam them up.

The fill ranged from crusty and full of debris (leaf bits, bugs, etc.) at the bottom near the intake to almost clean near the top by the outlet. I probably won't let it go all season this year. Poly fill as a filter media was another trick I learned from fish keeping. That industy also loves to try and rip you off with expensive filter inserts. 8-)
