A Little Something for Thanksgiving

A little something I did for Thanksgiving, channeling the surrealistic humor of Gary Larson, one of my favorite humorists, and his comic, The Far Side.

The Other Side of Thanksgiving

In a quite average living room, a family watches a television set with great intent. And on the television, there plays a wildlife documentary, the narrator speaking with an accent much alike Sir David Attenborough: “The days of waning light before the winter solstice are of the most perilous for our kind, for this is the time, the Homo Sapiens emerges from its den to hunt, his prey of choice: us. His single metallic claw propelled by fire strikes like lightning from a great distance. The poor chap hadn’t a chance. The Homo Sapiens then returns to his den; his quarry in hand, where he most unceremoniously tears the feathers from our unfortunate brethren; roasts his bare body to a crisp in a heated box, and presents it to his family, gathered around a flat piece of wood adorned with various other rich delicacies. Oh… the savagery of the Homo Sapiens annual ritual!” And the family of turkey’s gaze at the television in horror and disgust as they watch the Human family enjoy their Thanksgiving meal.

Nothing against Thanksgiving and eating turkey by the way. I am the Homo Sapiens hunter, and will very much enjoy my quarry tomorrow.

Happy Turkey day!

Indeed. :-) Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

I hope that everyone who celebrates it enjoys good food, good fellowship, good health and safe travels.

One of the benefits of being retired (other than having a bit more tread) is you can make your own schedule, to a point at least. I put on a turkey dinner for seven people a week ago, before I had to put up with chaos in the stores. So now I have a nice, relaxing day.

We also had a pretty relaxing day yesterday. I beat the chaos in the stores by shopping late in the evening last weekend. Then we cooked one or two dishes a day over the next few days until all that was left to cook was the bird on the day. Doing everything on Thanksgiving would be great, if one had a small army of cooks at their command

When I was a teen it always LOOKED like we had an army of cooks to help. But what we really had was a crowd of people who stood around in the kitchen and mostly got in the way. For the dinner I did earlier, I cooked the turkey, three vegetables, soup, and wine. I intentionally omitted any stuffing and asked my guests to bring appetizers, salad, or desserts. It worked out very well.
