I came across this on the news about Death Valley California. This is one of if not the hottest place there is in the US (in the 1930's the tempeture was 120 degrees and above for 43 straight days)
Recently parts of California including Death Valley have been hit with unusal rainfall because of hurricane in Baja California. Normal rainfall for Death Valley is 1.75 inches per year. One recent rainfall was 1.50 inches in ONE DAY[!!!
In fact Death Valley recently had enough rain this year to actually create something unusal for its locations. Waterfalls. Check out the links

Hmmmm. You may want to check your source on that.

The northern limit of Death Valley is considered the Grapevine Mountains, which are well south of Truckee, where the Donner Party passed East to West upon entering the Donner Pass.

I recall a very interesting documentary about a gentleman who was a ranger in Death Valley during the 20s-30s IIRC. Some harrowing and macabre (yet fascinating) stories for sure.
