The heating system here at Studio 588 is,...well,...complicated. There are FOUR separate heating units. One is an electric, ceiling mounted space heater in the workshop building. In the main house there are three. There are two heat pumps, on opposite ends. One is in the part of the house known as the old part, and one is in the new part. Originally that was because the house was built in two stages, but when it was rebuilt after the fire I kept in that way so that each side would have backup if the other failed. Actually both sides share the entire attic as an insulated return so they are not entirely separate. Then the part of the house known as the "greenhouse" has a good-sized propane space heater. That way the plants can survive a cold spell even if the electric power fails. And if the gas system fails but the power stays on there are a pair of electric space heaters that can be turned on in the greenhouse.

All that said and done, there is still a significant vulnerability to a power failure. I decided a while back that a whole-house generator is not practical. However, I do have a 9500watt generator that I purchased back in September. That is still waiting for a plumber to connect it to the propane tank. The plumber is supposed to look at the job Tuesday. Once that is connected, if there is a threat of a power failure I will run a 10-gage cord from the generator through a window and into the house. If the power goes down I will isolate my computers from the permanent system and run it off the generator.

No problem.

Gotta keep copyright1@mudpuddlevisuals.com online.

It's been busy. I take a perverted joy in the anguished cries of whacked moles. Got Holiday info from some of the operatives out there too.
It's a dirty job but I got to do it for over 20 years. Thank you.

I have an oil furnace but with current prices it's actually cheaper to supplement it with electric heat. I'm looking into getting a Mr. Buddy or Big Buddy propane heater for backup since both my current heat sources depend on the power grid. They have all kinds of oxygen and tip-over sensors that make them safe for use in the home and big one can output 18,000 BTU's if necessary.

That is what I have in the "greenhouse." A detail to keep in mind is that although the heater has a small fan, that is no substitute for a distribution system for the heated air. You cannot simply put a window fan in a doorway between two rooms. Also you cannot just bring in a can of propane from the barbeque.

Oh yea, I'm doing my research.....open flames and gas aren't something you wanna just start screwing around with. Both the Buddy heaters say they'll run off the 1lb camp cylinders or optionally a larger 20 or 30lb tank. Bigger tank would definitely be more convienient. I'm thinking I can pick up a longer hose and just run it out a cracked window to the tank outside.

My advice would be to have a plumber install a permanent pipe. I am assuming you can locate the heater in a place where that would be feasible. I don't think it will run for long on a 1 pound cylinder.

I have enough experience with propane that I feel comfortable fitting my own gas hoses. The scary part for me is burning it in the house, I've seen a lot of scenarios over the years where people went to sleep with a fuel burning heater running and just never woke up.

But the Buddy heaters seem safe. Tip over shut off, Low O2 shutoff, plus I've got my own Carbon Monoxide detectors in the house already.

Wrote a reply, then realized I was repeated what you already said.
