Comedian Tom Smothers, one-half of the Smothers Brothers, dies at 86



Tom Smothers, half of the Smothers Brothers and the co-host of one of the most socially conscious and groundbreaking television shows in the history of the medium, has died at 86.

The National Comedy Center, on behalf of his family, said in a statement Wednesday that Smothers died Tuesday at home in Santa Rosa, California, following a cancer battle.

“Tom was not only the loving older brother that everyone would want in their life, he was a one-of-a-kind creative partner,” his brother and the duo's other half, Dick Smothers, said in the statement. “Our relationship was like a good marriage — the longer we were together, the more we loved and respected one another. We were truly blessed.”

When "The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour" debuted on CBS in the fall of 1967 it was an immediate hit, to the surprise of many who had assumed the network’s expectations were so low it positioned their show opposite the top-rated "Bonanza."

But the Smothers Brothers would prove a turning point in television history, with its sharp eye for pop culture trends and young rock stars such as the Who and Buffalo Springfield, and its daring sketches — ridiculing the Establishment, railing against the Vietnam War and portraying members of the era's hippie counterculture as gentle, fun-loving spirits — found an immediate audience with young baby boomers. The show reached No. 16 in the ratings in its first season.

David Soul death: Singer and Starsky & Hutch actor dies, aged 80



David Soul, the actor and singer who appeared in TV series Starsky & Hutch, has died, aged 80. Soul’s wife Helen Snell confirmed the news in a statement on Friday (5 January), writing that he had died following a “valiant battle for life” while surrounded by his loving family.

“He shared many extraordinary gifts in the world as actor, singer, storyteller, creative artist and dear friend. His smile, laughter and passion for life will be remembered by the many whose lives he has touched.”

The US-born TV star was best known for his role in the well-loved crime show, playing Detective Kenneth “Hutch” Hutchinson from 1975 to 1979.

Soul, who starred opposite Paul Michael Glaser as Detective Dave Starsky in the 1970s US TV series, was also known for his roles in Here Come The Brides, Magnum Force, and The Yellow Rose.



There were THREE stars of that show, Paul, David and that so-bright white & red Ford Gran Torino.

Cindy Morgan, star of 'Tron' and 'Caddyshack,' dies at 69



Cindy Morgan, an actress known for her roles in "Caddyshack" and "Tron," has died.

The Palm Beach County Sheriff's office in Florida confirmed her death, which they said was due to natural causes, but officials were not able to specify when she died. She was 69.


She made her feature film debut in the 1980 raunchy hit comedy "Caddyshack." Starring opposite Chevy Chase and Rodney Dangerfield, she played Lacey Underall, the bombshell niece of a judge and country club founder played by Ted Knight. Directed by Harold Ramis, it was Morgan's first film.

"It was the longest and best party I've ever attended," she has said of the experience.
