Quicksand Fans

If there is one thing about most reality TV its its lack of reality. On the other hand, I expect an awful lot of people are currently rivited to TV and computer screens with the rescue of those Chilean miners. As I type this, 29 of the 33 are now out of the mine and the last 4, plus the very brave rescue person loading the miners into the capsule at the bottom end, out to be out within three or four more hours. Sometimes there IS such a thing as good news.

Indeed!! Quite a tribute to the human spirit from both the miners and rescuers!

I haven't watched any video but I have been reading about it. Since there's not much access to things at work, the happy headlines greeted me here at home!

The happiest endings of all are the happy endings that are non-fiction!

Amen to that!

It's not often you hear of a mine collapse with survivors. Those guys are in amazingly good condition for what they went through (just saw on the news 3 of them are out of the hospital already). Miners are some of the balliest people on earth, imho.
Seriously, it's just nice in general to hear some good news on the news for once.

It's a welcome news story in the midst of HORRIBLE election season BS.

Of course if they had been British miners fighting to protect their jobs homes families community livelihoods and way of life the entire British press would have been united in crying "DIE YOU BASTARDS FOR NOT BELIEVING THE SUN SHINES OUT OF MARVELLOUS MAGGIE'S ARSE!" like it did during the 1884-85 strike (I was at Orgreave; I still have double vision ringing in the ears and headaches from when a paratrooper in a cop uniform tried to rearrange my skull).

Fortunately these were just your standard patriotic, Elvis loving, Chilean tough guy miners. Normal people would have ventured toward the edge of sanity before it was discovered they were alive. It was wonderful to see a happy ending where they didn't even have a body to leave behind. If I had been the guy who had both wife and mistress show up I might not have been in such a rush to get out.

Just like the major earthquake they had earlier this year, the success and organization of the rescue shows that Chile is not some backward collection of mountains and hillbillies. Well done.

Reminded me of quicksand folk in some ways. Kinda like, on another thread, there was a dilemma briefly mentioned. "Do you bring your cell phone to a mudpit?" If you get seriously trapped, and you need a full rescue squad, you'll have one!

But if you are found to be breaking a law of any kind...or it's a complicated rescue so it lands on TV and all your friends and family show up...

Very unlikely I would be in there without a muddy friend of the female persuasion already. Not sure if that simplifies things. Imagine getting stuck with your mistress. Does that cut the problem in half or make it twice as bad?
