Could see this going pear-shaped around 1:30 into it; way too much wind , and not enough horsepower. Plus, if you working tugs like that, its generally advisable to pull out BEFORE you flying down the Deathstar Trench and forget to pull up...
Not to mention, y'know, like taking lines on the SEAWARD side of the boat, so nothing sorta gets crushed like a beer can...

Damn lucky, that tug could have capsized or been crushed a lot worse.

What's the protocol on managing all of that? I'm guessing the harbor pilot was in charge at that point?

Yeah, Billie, that was a big one and I bet it's like driving a box kite shaped house boat on a certain western desert lake. They should have had Dave at the wheel and several naked girls running around and pointing different directions.

Wow.....traded a little paint there didn't they. The people on that tug have bigger balls then I do. I'd have jumped onto the dock and run for it.

Masters Orders, Pilot's Advice

Although docking pilots are usually skilled with all the required local knowledge for tying up or departing a port. You'd have to reference the accident report (if the report is even done yet, most take as long as air accident investigations) to get all the horrible details.

Jumping ashore and running for it might have been an option, but there's also the chance of falling in the water and drowning, or getting ground into beef by the screw, or buttered against the dock wall. It really is a Bad Day (tm) when this sort of thing happens.

That could have been BAD. I hope there were no injuries. Doesn't look like there probably were, but I think the guys on that ship may still be shaking.

The tug, looks like it got a bulwark crushed on the starboard side, and its mainmast somewhat ,er, bent .

It really is a good example though of the difference in mass; the people onboard the larger ship probably never even felt a thing. Whereas the tug, well, listing at 30+ degrees with all the associated beer-canning noises, probably wasnt a day at the beach.


Like in car crash or similar mishap; you only start shaking afterward when you thinking it through...

Ouch! Talk about being between a rock and a hard place.

Looked like the tug that got squished tried moving along side of the tug closest to the bow to assist in pushing out, yet their combined power wasn't enough.

It also seemed the squished tug (once it righted itself) continued to manuver to help keep the big ship away from the pier after it got squished. Is that a good read, or is the fact the squished tug manuvered backwards along with the cargo ship a result of being pulled along with it?

Yeah, bet the tug crew were hoping that big ship would just keep moving along and out to sea versus pressing it into the pier again.

"Okay, plan B- use the tugs as fenders!" Whiskey, Tango, Foxtrot? Heaven forbid they fit ships like that out with flanking rudders and bow thrusters. . .
