This is ridiculous, both parties are against it however so there is still hope, but the CRTC is so corrupt it might as well be targeted for assassination, just my 2 cents.

If this passes and becomes wide spread , say good bye to downloading anything if your Canadian unless you want to pay a huge frigging fee per gigabyte.

Considering the primary motive is for Bell to make people buy their cable instead of use the net for watching shows, it is a fairly transparent attempt at a money grab. Expect epic fail

That would indeed consign you to the digital stone age rather quickly. Amazing how they can charge for usage on the internet but they won't let you buy cable television services the same way. Our northern brethren need to assemble a crowd with torches and farm tools outside the Parliament building right now.

When I first heard the news on tv, I was stunned! I hope that it doesn't happen, since I periodically download shows months before they air locally, at 350 mb per episode, sometimes catching up on an entire season's worth within a few weeks, and sometimes new episodes each week (quickly caught up on season 2 of Merlin and then watched each new episode of season 3 last fall, while Space was still airing season 2, and only now is airing season 3). Whenever any Vancouver Canucks hockey games aren't aired on any cable channels we receive, I access live video streams at http://atdhe.net , or at http://www.myp2pforum.eu/forums/29 . Then, there are the video clips and pictures downloaded here, and stuff accessed at YouTube and other video sharing websites, and I also sometimes browse sites with online tv channels from all over the world, as well as some sites that stream movies, programs, and user-generated content, such as http://www.justin.tv/ . Then there are regular software/OS updates, exploring with Google Maps/Earth, and accessing weather maps and animated weather satellite/radar imagery, not to mention all the other various sites I browse, as well as receiving video clips by email, such as one of a man being charged by a moose, and shooting it just as it was inches away from plowing into him. So, it all adds up, and if they drastically lowered the caps on maximum bandwidth usages (currently have a 75 GB maximum which is plenty for now), then my ability to access internet content would become quite a drain on my pocketbook!

Okay, i am not affected by this decision and last month my total internet traffic was about 22GB, so i would be below this 25GB-border mentioned in that article.

But what keeps me wondering: Isn't that a totally ridiculous regulation of prices on a free market? I mean, there is a government agency that says: Hey Mr. independent internet service provider, now it's me who controls the competition!

I doubt that would be legal at all.

A lot of Americans feel the same way about health care but Canada manages that. What's the difference?

In my part of the world we paid for traffic until recently. Even more, we had different prices for so-called "Ukrainian" traffic and "Foreign" traffic. Ukrainian traffic was about 20 (or even 100) times cheaper than foreign, and it was determined by routing, not by the physical location of the server. So, Ukrainian networks of certain providers were considered as "foreign". And the prices were huge! Also, many providers offered unlimited access to their internal networks with gaming servers and file sharing sites. Approximately in 2007 the law prohibited the differentiation between the foreign and Ukrainian traffic. Now we have "unlimited" packages, too. Those who download movies from the Internet and use torrents, prefer unlimited packages for sure. But, say, I refuse to switch for "unlim" despite my provider offers it rather busily. To me the unlimited package would be either 30% more expensive then what I have now, or offer lower bandwidth at the same price. I have 30 GB prepaid per month, and I usually consume only half of it.

Our former government decided to get additional money by impose a special tax "for the Internet" - a certain value for each megabyte. That would make the unlimited packages impossible. There was a loud buzz around it, but fortunately the government was changed, and everything settled down...

What I mean, the life wouldn't stop for Canadians. Certain inconvenience - that's for sure, but nothing more.
