The answer is the Egg.

According to the biological definition of a species, two animals are in the same species if they can produce fertile offspring together. Therefore, the first chicken would be the oldest chicken capable of producing offspring with a modern-day chicken.
We'll call that that animal the primal chicken.

Now, by this definition, the primal chicken can produce fertile offspring with a modern chicken, but it's parent cannot. Therefore, the parent of the primal chicken is not a chicken.

The primal chicken came from an egg, the primal chicken egg. The primal chicken egg preceded the primal chicken, therefore it came first. The animal that laid that egg was not a chicken, so the final conclusion - the egg came first.

I had to chime in on the chicken/egg question with this quick tidbit. The Simon and Garfunkel hit from the 60's(?) "Mother and Child Reunion" was actually inspired by a asian dish Paul Simon had that contained both chicken AND egg. Just a little morbid trivia.

It's a safe bet to say that the rooster came first.

MOTHER and CHILD REUNION

4 cup steamed rice
3/4 lb chicken thighs or chicken breasts
1 onion
1 2/3 cups soup stock (dashi)
7 tbsp soy sauce
4 tbsp mirin
3 tbsp sugar
4 eggs
PREPARATION:
Cook steamed rice. Cut chicken into bite-size pieces and thinly slice onion. Put dashi soup stock in a pan and heat.
Add soy sauce, mirin, and sugar in the soup. Put chicken in the pan and simmer on low heat for a few minutes. Add onion slices to the pan and simmer for a few more minutes. Beat eggs in a bowl. Bring the soup to a boil, then pour the eggs over chicken and onion. Turn the heat down to low and put on a lid. After one minute, turn off the heat. To serve, first put steamed rice in a deep bowl, then place the chicken and egg on top of the rice.
*Makes 4 servings

Sounds rather good, no?

I remember when I was at UBC, I often bought slices of pizza at "Pie R Squared". One of my favorites was "Chicken Enchilada", where the topping included chicken, eggs, jalepeno peppers and beans (my other favorite pizza there was "Pacific Smoked Salmon").

I my part of the world this discussion always takes a specific direction, because we call "eggs" what you cal "balls"
