From my Experince play Call of Duty online the kids that I have run into end up learning profanity from the adults that the play with! I honestly wish that parents would take the time to make sure their kids do not play M rated games like CoD because I shouldn't have to join into a match only to mute two or three players right off the back because their voices are so whiny and high-pitched >.<

Most of the issue I can see is that there's pressure to either "keep it clean" because "of the children", or there would be matching pressure to keep the children off.

Neither one is actually, truly feasible. Either you play a constant game of 'whack a mole' with filters that have a lot of false positives to try to keep it clean, the processing power impossibility of filtering the voice streams for filthy words, with all sorts of things that ooze through the cracks as a result... or you have the unenviable task of making people sign a virtual contract that, "Oh, I'm 18 or older, yessir I am," with a system that doesn't really ask for a password by default on each and every login of the console, potential multiples in the household, or even just someone lying, and credit cards no longer being an effective way to keep the kids out because kids can come with their own credit cards now.

What it needs to be, really, is just, "parents, if you allow your snowflakes onto our service, we take NO responsibility for what they see or hear on our service. We say 'online play may change your game experience', and we MEANT it."

Microsoft announced about a year and a half ago via Xbox.com that they were going to do a cleansing of absurd gamertags. Gamers get a message if they a gamertag that is deemed inappropriate and are asked to change it.
My friend had one and was asked to change it or else he couldn't play or even sign in. They turned on obscenity filters to high as well when it came to creating gamertags.

They banned my friend, Stinky Pink, for his name.
I was DeadlyQuicksand for a while, but my wife always had a weird reaction to that every time we'd log on to play rockband or something.

I try to represent for the grown ups and not squabble with Tweens.
Occasionally I have gotten carried away and asked about how their moms suck cock and if they get to watch.
I actually even talked to 2 moms, and of course they sound like idiot douche bags.
I feel no remorse at all for saying something like that to a kid who's parent should never have gotten the game for them.

The M rating isnt to protect some fucking little kids from something that's too violent or intense for them,

I may not be the most responsible adult but I do like to think I'm a responsible parent and fairly old school at that. AT has further illustrated the maxim that there is no such thing as a bad kid. They become what you raise them to be. Now that we are seeing a generation of children being raised by children of the "do your own thing" generation I have concerns that civility and responsibility will become a lost art. I pity those that won't take responsibility for what their kids get into and how they learn to handle it.

Went to the movies last night and had to get up in the middle of it to complain to the manager because someone's 3 year old wouldn't stop yelling that they wanted to go home. What movie was I at you ask? "Winnie the pooh"? Nope. "Harry Potter And The Never Ending Movie Franchise""? Nope. The movie was "Horrible Bosses", a delightful little R rated comedy that features, among other things, an almost nude Jennifer Aniston, a delightful character by the name of Motherfucker Jones and a guy shooting himself in the leg. I have lost all hope for the human race.
