Speed is not how one captures lightning, these are actually time exposures of up to 2 minutes in some instances. A tripod and a cable release to hold the shutter open in 'bulb' mode is the key unless you are shooting daytime lightning like in this shot...

I can't speak for the Canon 60D but most modern SLR cameras,certainly the Nikon D7000 and I presume the D50, use a remote release rather than an actual cable. The term "cable release" is probably used here as a holdover term from the "old days."
I use the Promaster Model 3077, which is a multi-function timer-controlled remote release. It can take images at fixed intervals as well as long exposures, but I believe there is a less-expensive device for just the continuous or single-shot remote shots. It came with several jumper wires for different camera manufacturers, one of which is Canon I think.
