Not entirly untrue. Snopes article says said Marine actually clotheslined the guy while he was running away and did get stabbed in the resulting fight. Seems like it was just the extent of the scumbags injuries that were exaggerated. Too bad about that.

I will say, even if the injuries in the article were exaggerated... if you stabbed at the Marine in an effort to get him off of you, odds are high to guaranteed that his three buddies will each land at least one blow upon you in response... and they will be aiming to take you out of the fight with just one of those blows.
Thankfully for the real life perp, they merely contented themselves with restraining him.

This one has to be the stupidest criminal in history- and Snopes verified most of the details!
An armed robber walked into a GUN SHOP, having to walk past a marked police car, pulled out a .38 and yelled "This is a stickup, nobody move!" or some such. Result: One dead robber, nobody else wounded, even though the robber missed the clerk and uniformed police officer and hit a stack of ammo which exploded. Several of the customers were also carrying and drew down on him, but the clerk and the cop put him down with four to the chest (or some such- can't resist my urge to use the storyteller's flair.)

You heard the one about the two idiots in Australia who tried to hold up a roadside bar? Yeah, the one filled with Hell's Angels? Suffice it to say that things didn't work out the way they planned.
Locally there was one I was personally aware of. Everyone here still laughs about a community thug that was suspected of a long list of terrible things. He and a partner walked into a nearby market to hold it up and didn't notice the six cops getting coffee while returning from a hunting trip. The thug was paralyzed, his partner was killed, and that market still has bullet holes all over it.
