6 Months....

....and approximately 22 hours since I last smoked a cigarette. WOOOOOOOT!!!!!
If you don't smoke, for the love of God don't start. If you do, quit. You don't realize what it's doing to you. If you can't quit on your own, Chantix is your friend. I'm not normally a fan of better living through chemistry, but those little blue fucking pills are a miracle.

Before you know it it'll be a whole week. Just take it one day at a time.

Congratulations!

It's about the most addicting substance on Earth but you can do it! And when you really feel like your last cigarette is way in the past -- you'll NEVER be sorry!

Your body and your wallet will thank you! Trust me on that! I know that you are a sinker so imagine all those mudpits getting a bit easier to negotiate...and you'll be less tired doing them, and you'll be around to enjoy them longer!

They already have haha....my sense of smell came back about a month and a half in and so far I calculate roughly $1000 not spent on killing myself.

Sorry I'm behind but first of all I'm very happy for you. This is one of the big soap box issues of my life after I watched my grandfather choke to death on the damn things. I'll never forget hearing the doctor say he was perfectly healthy he just couldn't breathe. Then I got to watch my father in law do pretty much the same thing but at a much younger age. He was a physician of the old school and smoked two or three packs a day for most of his life. His last two years were under constant care from my wife and her sister as he slowly hacked out his final breaths on an oxygen tank. He pointed out once that it was easier to treat a heroin addiction than it was nicotine because he had the tools for heroin.

I watch guys at work put on all kinds of protective gear so they won't inhale more than one particle in a trillion of something that is relatively harmless and then light up a smoke as soon as they leave the plant. Cigarette smoking is one thing that is absolutely one hundred percent guaranteed to take time off your life. Even if it didn't kill you a minute sooner it turns your hair prematurely gray, give you breath like a dragon, makes you miserable when you have a cold, inhibits any activity that requires breathing, and causes all of us to expend more on completely preventable illnesses.

This is above and beyond the idiocy of setting fire to hard earned money.

I noticed a group sitting around a camp fire one night and some of the moved as the wind blew smoke in their direction. Then after moving one of the party lit a raging trash fire four inches from his face and deliberately sucked the toxic after effects into his lungs. My wife works for the county parks and recreation department and every time she sees someone exit the rec center and light up she confronts them about it. Why are they making all of this effort to improve their health and then doing one of the worst possible things they can do to ruin it?

I'm going to ask you how old you were when you began smoking? I bet you were under 18, right? If the people marketing this deadly poison for profit can't get you hooked by then you are generally too smart to take it up later in life. Really curious. How old were you?

Anyhow this is great news and I sincerely hope you have beat if for good. I know addictions are difficult to shake but this is one of the best to be rid of. I'm happy for you. Good luck.

Know what you mean about that soapbox man....I swore to myself that if I made it this time I wouldn't be one of those "Nicotine Nazie" type people but after realizing what this shit was doing to me I can't help but preach to anyone who'll listen.

I actually was 18 the first time I lit up. Highschool graduation party, one of my buddies bought a bunch of cigars and passed them around. None of us were smokers but we all basically said the same thing--what the hell one can't be that bad--and lit up. I'm still in contact with most of the guys who were there that night and I firmly belive that was when 3 of us became addicts (more on that word later).

11 years and approximatley $15,000 later (holy fucking shit it makes me sick just to type that) two things made me quit.

The first was the call I made to my grandmother on her birthday. I noticed she was talking kind of funny and asked her if she had a cold. Turns out it was actually the oxygen tubes up her nose. She was a chainsmoker for as long as I can remember and the Emphysema fairy had finally paid her a visit. She's going to spend the next several years slowly suffocating to death while we watch.

The other reason was that I was finally able to take an honest look in the mirror and admit to myself that I was, in fact, an addict. I did not have a bad habit, I had a serious chemical dependancy problem.

I'm convinced that the second reason above is why people have such a hard time quitting this. Once you read up on Nicotine and it's effects on the body you realize that what you, as a smoker, are doing is really no different then a crackhead lighting up his pipe or a heroin junkie sticking a needle in his arm. People don't like to admit that, their doctors try to sugarcoat it, but that horrible "A" word is what you are and it's all you're ever going to be unless you can nut up and take ownership of it.

I tried to quit a few times before using the patch, the gum, those little hard candy type things....the idea of quitting an addictive drug by utilizing a different delivery system for it is just laughable. Look, I quit smoking crack by snorting cocaine.....

Chantix does work though. It messes with your blood pressure a bit and the lucid dreaming can be a bit much, but it works. 3 days into the first week (you're allowed to smoke for the first seven days) I was down from a pack a day to half a pack with no real effort. I emptied my last pack on July 3rd, 2011 at 9:00pm, and by then I was only lighting up out of sheer habit. The drug blocks the nicotine receptors in your brain from absorbing their favorite thing so you don't get a buzz no matter how much you smoke.

Stupid soapbox somehow found it's way under my feet again....

Congrats.

The very first quicksand video I ever attempted to film, unsuccessfully as it turned out, was a public service announcement about smoking. Picture an actress about chin deep and going down. There is a cigarette in her hand. She looks at it, then at the rising mud, and then at the camera and says, "Do you know the difference between smoking and sinking in quicksand?" She then answers: "These (holding up the cigarette) will kill you you.... this (looking down at the mud) won't."

Mynock, you just stay right up there on that soap box, there's always a way to "tactfully" convince folks to give it up. I was lucky, I started early (12 years old) but I quit for good when I was 22 and it really has made a world of difference.

By comparison friend of mine two years older than myself who used to wake up in the middle of the night to smoke a cigarette is now on oxygen full time and suffering from COPD. He'll go to his grave with those tubes hanging out of his nose and as you noted it's a horrible thing to be witness to.

Congratulations and keep up the effort, don't need to tell you your life depends on it.
