Container ships fascinate me. It always seems like their centers of gravity are too high, and one good swell would topple half the containers overboard. I've always wondered how many containers are at the bottom of the sea from having fallen off their ships.

The answer to your question is "a lot"

If you go to cargolaw.com you will see a host of marine accidents, and many including lost containers in bad weather. Think they list the record there, and its over a hundred in one go; there is probably more stuff on the bottom of the ocean or washed up here and there than you would believe. Imagine finding a container full of adidas

Don't forget about the one filled with yellow rubber duckies. Oceanographers having been using them to plot ocean currents and see where currents will take debris dumped into the seas.

The container that I used in Kabul had an algae line that was 6" from the roof line and ran straight to the roof 6' from the doors. How long it was submerged is anyones guess; days to weeks depending on climate. I always wondered what was lost in that particular shipment.
