offbeat idea for video..

Postby jagfiles » Sat Aug 11, 2012 12:46 am

I don't know why this popped in my head for a quicksand situiation. But how the invisible woman in quicksand. If it's in a movie/tv show or a quicksand photographer here tried that I can see (sorry no pun intended) where that would have it's challenges in doing. That could be done perhaps as part of The Fantastic 4 somehow.

That's an interesting idea. With my new QS toy (Real Flow) I could do something like that and it would be really interesting to see how it comes out. :D A Fantastic 4 suit should not be too hard. Maybe someday... ;)

Probably not, actually. At least I don't think so. Shooting a scene in this manner results in the ability to turn the "green" area transparent. However, this merely allows a background layere to show through. Since the positioning of the green area would change as the actress moved it would be necessary to make the background layer move acordingly. If you simply used a static shot, or even a moving video, of the mud, shot separately, it would not move or would not move properly. The result would be a visible edge where the foreground and background layers met.

On the other hand, I suppose you might explain the "edge" as a not-quite perfect invisibility.

A body partly submerged in a pit of mud WOULD create a deformation in the shape of the mud, but it would actually be in the shape of a mold of the body all the way down from the surface. If you had a series of body casts it might be possible (albeit pretty expensive) to produce a series of shots in which each casting was submerged to its top edge, so as to create a body-shaped hole in the mud. Aboout the only way I would attempt such a scene, however, is if someone else provided the molds. Even with that it would be quite an,....err,.... undertaking.

Hmmm. I am not sure how that could be done.

I did see a clip of an invisible woman being slowly covered in mud (or a mud-like substance). I don't have the clip, but know that it was done by Dirty Muse, run by Mud Mad Phil of UMD.

She was invisible. Stuff dripped down and as it landed on her, it slowly became her entire covered form. You didn't see any actual woman at all, just the parts of her that were covered.

I thought it was a pretty cool special effect. But it must have been quite some project. I have no idea how much money Phil has to spend on his videos but I do get the feeling that it's considerable. I have never seen an entire Phil video -- just trailers and clips -- but it's all pretty slick.

The few 'modern' invisible women-type scenes I have seen have been rather well done. I seem to remember one done in broad daylight in a park with water used to find her that was rather nicely done :) BUT, having said that, the amount of computer power required to render such a scene would be rather large. And Expensive; an example of using modern CG for just movie-quality animation, say a game trailer or similar, runs around about a million bucks per minute.
Integrating that in a live-action scene, well.....

This could make for a fun ending for such a video if it were made. Once the invisible woman gets rescued from the quicksand after not so easy and not so short process we hear another woman's voice from the quicksand that says "HEY WHAT ABOUT ME!!!?" (another invisible gal)

I am guessing that what Robert refers to here is either a hose down of an invisible woman who can be scene while covered in mud and then not as the mud is removed, OR one in which she cannot be scene while covered and then appears as the mud is washed off. Both would be extremely difficult to achieve. For the latter, she would need to be covered in bright green (or blue) mud, probably paint, and that would be very difficult to light properly, especially with water flying around. For the former, she would have to have her body painted green or blue prior to getting covered in mud. Given that body paint has to wash off this would be close to impossible. A scene of this type, I think, is for the Daz/Poser/Maya people to do.

I think this is doable. At first I thought the submersion bit would be difficult, but then I realized it's not.

If someone sends me a decent story idea via email, I'll probably do it next season, or the one after.

I was thinking of your first example here Fred.

Anything done for the first time will have it's difficulties and unexpected obstacles to over come. This would take some research but given the time and place to do this I think it could be done. It would be certainly fun to try.
