Out of nowhere just admits he had an affair and poof gone? Nah. Hate to be a conspiracy theorist but I think he knows something we don't.

See, he did it all wrong. He should have gone out and said "I did not. Have. Sexual. Relations. With that woman." and he'd be fine.

Bill Maher had a great line.... Petraus should have known you can't mix spying and sex... oh, and the new James Bond movie comes out this week

That depends on what the meaning of the word 'is' is.

Seriously, it appears Gen. Petraeus is all too human. Of course, he's not the first military leader to have an affair. By many accounts, Dwight D. Eisenhower had one with his female driver during World War II. That certainly didn't keep him from creating the strategies which defeated Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy.

Maybe we're just more sensitive about this sort of thing now.

Intelligence agents in general are discouraged from this kind of stuff because it can make them subject to blackmail and further compromising situations. It would be difficult for him to discipline a subordinate while guilty of the same thing.

Technically, there is a difference between what happens in the Bond movies and in all the cases mentioned in this thread, and I mean aside from the Bond franchise being fiction. Bond is unmarried. Therefore, what he is portreyed as doing is having sex (probably not sleeping a whole lot so I'll avoid the euphemism) with a tempting and willing woman. As such its hard to see where that leaves him vulnerable to any kind of blackmail. True, the woman might turn out to be an enemy spy herself but that is another issue.

One plot ploy (to change the subject) so far not introduced in the Bond series is, of course, a quicksand rescue followed by sex scene. This is urgently needed.

This sort of thing was portrayed well in The Good Shepherd, featuring Matt Damon. Really good film, even though it is sobering as well as fascinating.

Yes, the Bond situation is a little different. Often he already knows his playtime partner is working for the bad guys but he's so good it doesn't matter. In fact, in Goldfinger, he was so incredible that he not only got Pussy Galore to change sides he got her to change from lesbian to straight.

The Israelis had a female agent that was so good she seduced and convinced an Iraqi pilot, Munir Redfa, to fly his Mig-21 to Israel befoe the 1967 war. She even got his family out without pissing off his wife. Now that's REALLY good.
