I don't know what to think here......on one hand I was expecting something totally different. On the other hand it's like somebody turned Left 4 Dead into a movie.

It bears no resemblance to the book. Granted, the broad scope of the book would be tough distill into a 2-hour movie, but they could have taken a few of the storylines and gone with them in either a dramatic or mockumentary format. The book is basically the "Zombie Survival Guide" put into context.

Maybe Pitt thinks the whole slow-moving moaning zombie schtick portrayed in the book is played out or something.

I think the way the two sync up is the survival guide is supposed to have been written in the early days of the war. I distinctly remember one of the characters being inteviewed (might have been the British guy who carried a Claymore and talked about castles) mentioning that the "American Survival Manual" was almost useless to to people in the UK because of the lack of guns and SUV's.

Trailer looked pretty good. Haven't read the book so I have the benefit of just enjoying the movie for what it is (if its good of course). It does look like Left 4 Dead.

I've never been a big zombiephile so pardon me if I miss some of the finer points. The movie shows zombies attacking two places I would think least likely to suffer from such attacks, Israel and the US. These are just dead people, right? How can they perform so much better dead than they could when they were alive? Stumbling bags of rotting flesh who have to spread by biting should be easy picking in a nation where there are 15 million licensed hunters and ten times that many firearms. In Israel every adult has easy access to automatic weapons and knows how to use them. I'll grant that many dead are interred above ground so that might change the ratio a bit but it still doesn't seem even. Both are warrior nations with great military ability to deal with worse things than slow moving mindless targets. I just don't see how zombies could ever represent an existential threat to humanity in North America at least.

The answer I believe is that the movie is really about it's extremely well compensated star, Brad Pitt. Nothing against Mr. Pitt at all but if it starred someone of lesser movie star stature you might get more credible zombies. They aren't going to pay him millions to get laughs and run over slow movers with a bus.

I'm no zombiephile either. Unless it's a cute zombie. A nice zombie, a funny zombie...I want a good zombie. But these ugly dead brainless flesh-eating things...naw.

But one zombiephile that I know had advice for the Zombie Apocalypse: Just move north. Far north. And watch 'em freeze. They can't move when they're solid.

That was a plot point in the World War Z book.

Zombiephile sounds really gross......I just got this horrible mental image of a zombie lurching across a kitchen floor at some poor desperatly retreating kid and all of a sudden Chris Hansen walks in and tells it to have a seat.

There have been many different takes on the zombie but they all come down to basically two schools of thought. On one hand you have the "George Romero" type zombies, re-animated, shambling corpses that are slow, stupid and very very easy to underestimate (more on that later.

The other main type you see (this is mostly in more modern movies) are the "28 Days Later" type zombies, which technically aren't zombies at all, just victimes of some mutant disease or another that's left them with a healthy body but a sort of melty brain. They're mindlessly aggressive an cannabalistic like the Romeros but more athletic because they're still technically among the living. Don't worry, they're not really dead, they just have rabies.

World War Z the book was based on a Romero type zombie plague. The movie looks like they went with 28 Days zombies.

Now, as for the actual danger of a stumbling corpse, try this next time you're at the range: Tie a helium filled ballon to an RC car. Draw a mean zombie face on it. Now have someone drive it toward you unsteadily at a slow walking pace. See how many bullets it takes you to hit it. Now imagine a dozen ballons coming at you at once, and every time you shoot one two more hear the shot and start advancing on your position.....
Think of them like smelly rotten Terminators. They're not especially smart, but killing them is hard and they don't give up till one of you is dead.
