Farewell, Jean Stapleton

I learned that Jean Stapleton has died at the age of 90. She had a long career as a character actress in Hollywood. She's best remembered for the role of Edith Bunker on the groundbreaking television comedy, "All in the Family." Edith was the long-suffering wife of the lead character, the bigoted Archie Bunker, who was played by Carroll O'Connor. It's a tribute to both of these performers that we could see the characters actually loved each other. We could see what Edith saw and knew about Archie: despite his gruffness, he had a soft heart. He may have called his wife a "dingbat," but he very much loved her. Edith put up with a lot from Archie, but she loved him, too.

Stapleton was a remarkable actress. She will be missed.

I had to put up hearing my dad watch every damn episode (as reruns) so I will just say, as much as I hated Archie's stupid annoying accent, Edith is now finally re-united with Archie again....
