I remember him giving a superb performance which couldn't quite save a dreadful film called The Mexican. He effortlessly acted both Brad Pitt and Julia Roberts off the screen; which made it unfair that he was probably being paid a tenth (if that) of what either of the two "stars" got.

after the Sopranos came out, I began noticing his previous appearances in movies... another case of an "overnight" success built on years of work

Pretty much my thoughts.
He was never a Hollywood actor, despite his talent, although I think he made his life like that on purpose, I would never want to be in the spotlight, having to deal with stuff like paparazzi and bullshit.
