I don't disagree with anything he says. It's a beast, but a controllable beast. Your hand will hurt the day after you shoot it, the webbing between your thumb and forefinger takes the most abuse, after that many shots you won't be able to properly grip things without it hurting for days. Ammo's expensive. At the end of the day it really doesn't have a practical use unless you have a problem with Cape Buffalo rummaging through your trash cans.
That being said, I don't regret buying mine. S&W's X-Frame was a little more than I wanted to spend so I went with the single action BFR from Magnum Research.

You should check out his Glock videos, not to mention one I think he has on specifically comparing the 1911 with the Glock in .45 -- he might have started as a revolver guy, and loves them, but he really has embraced the Glock in all models.

As you say, its the hand not so much the wrist gets abused; he discusses that , wondering if some combination of grips might make a little less abusive. And yeah, at 2.50 to 3 bucks a round it is not a piece to just plink with for kicks

I have a love/hate relationship with my Glock. It's ugly, it feels cheap, it's not made in America and the trigger breaks too hard for my taste. On the other hand it's probably the safest, most reliable semi-auto pistol ever designed. Multiple independent internal safeties take almost all human error out of the equation and make it next to impossible to unintentionally discharge at the same time. You can chamber a round and drop it, bang it on a table, kick it across the room, etc and it won't go off. At the same time there's no actual button to worry about to make it safe so in a high stress situation all you have to do is draw, aim and squeeze.

The 1911, now THAT is a fine piece of shooting iron. Been shooting my uncles Colt for years, finally picked up my own back in March. Easy to grip, easy to shoot, easy on the eyes, cheap plentiful ammo, lots of accessories.....if I had to recommend ONE handgun to anyone I'd point them in the direction of Colt or Springfield.

EVERYONE seems to say the Glock is no beauty, but you could say the same of modern Walthers like the PPS and PPQ, or any given SiG -- and they are all awesome pieces of engineering. The 1911 is one of those convergences of "it looks good, and is good". And the modern versions are nicer, less or no chance of slide bite, and far safer. Definitely one of the candidates to own if you could only own one semi-automatic handgun. Glock #2, I admit
