The tempeture for Death Valley offically topped out at 129 degrees today. That's right 129.
This is just short of the all time record of 134.
On the news one guy was being interviewed out there and was saying that's enough to start making your shoes melt since the cement/asphalt can reach temps near 200 degrees from what they say.

Or, more precisely, just short of the all time WORLD record of 134˚F!

I often make the joke that it's so hot in the low desert of Arizona, the asphalt goes "squish squish" under your feet. I do know of people who've been wearing sandals made of some plastic material who have had them literally melt into the pavement.

There's a town in Arizona called Salome. It was named after the wife of one of the town's founders, Mrs. Salome Pratt. According to Dick Wick Hall, a humorist who was also one of the town's founders, Mrs. Pratt stepped out of her car one summer day in her bare feet. That's how the town's name came about: "Salome, Where She Danced."

I hope this doesn't gross anyone out, but, in Lake Havasu City, Ariz., they have an annual dashboard cookie baking contest. Yes, you read that right. I understand they have prizes for the best dashboard cookies. Of course, they have all kinds of rules to make the whole thing very sanitary. I guess a car makes a very effective oven in the hot sun of the desert summer.

I once had almost a whole 12-pack of soda pop burst when I forgot and left it in my car for a few hours. I was impressed by the splatter pattern it left on the back window. If I work on this right, maybe I could create a new painting medium.

They were on a cookie sheet so I'd say it was sanitary enough lol. The only thing I'd be concerned about is the smell from all half cooked vinyl plastic ruining them. A modern car really stinks inside after it's been sitting in the heat for a while.

that goes away after the first summer...at least out here. Then you have to cover the vinyl with something or it will start to resemble the San Andreas fault all by itself from being baked repeatedly

I learned very soon after I moved to the Phoenix area in 1983 that you do not leave a vinyl car seat uncovered in the summer sun. Sitting on a vinyl seat that's been out in the sun for even a short period time can burn you in some sensitive places, even if you're fully clothed. I kid you not.

I've been baking in the AZ sun out here since '70 so I've got a pretty good handle on the entertaining things heat can do
